Equality for gingers

This is an actual letter to the editor, sent in to the Tri-City Herald. God bless that city(s).

Where is the line at racial inequality drawn? Who is the person that decides what is hate, and what is not? I thought that discrimination was something of the past, but no, with the past events, I'm afraid it has surfaced once again. Too many people now are using the derogatory term "ginger," "carrot top," and worse as means of verbally abusing the redhead population. Not a day goes by that red-haired children are not bullied on account of their hair color.

People today wave it off and shrug their shoulders at the matter, but for me, enough is enough! We are being judged not by our deeds or our character, but by the color of our hair. If I have never called a black person or a person of Hispanic descent a racial epithet, then why should I have to tolerate others calling me a "flamer?"

I don't find this funny. People with red hair make up less than 2 percent of the world's population, and science proves that we will all be extinct in the upcoming 50 years. So why end our memory with hate. We are not asking for some sort of reward, only for the equal treatment others can get freely.

SETH DEENSOM, Richland

After reading this, I now officially see my meaning in life. If red heads are going to extinct in 50 years, I'm damn well going to be the last one that kicks the bucket. You hear me? I will not croak until I'm the last living ginger on planet Earth. They should give me a medal for something like that.

10 pickup lines that never work

So Casey and I have had our far share of experiences sampling the various bars around the Spokane area. It's here where we've sharpened our skills to become masters of night life.

"Why are we sitting at a table to one leg shorter than the other?"

"Why are we in the corner by ourselves"

"Why is Lindsey not sitting with us?"

"Lets go home and play Halo."

It was during this time that we discovered the top ten pickup lines that will never, ever work.

1. I play for the Seattle Mariners - Unless your last name in Junior or Suzuki, you're not getting any baseball groupies. They're too busy going after the Spokane Indians and Spokane Shock players.

2. Want to see my Transformer's lunch box? Insert Justin Timberlake's "Dick in a box" joke here.

3. I was the top player at Laser Quest today, yeah I had 60 percent accuracy shooting. You know what I like to do after I do battle, yeah, I like to mate. You might want to take off the Laser Quest gear before taking a crack at this line.

4. I'm a Gonzaga student.
That would explain the festive sweater vest and the backwards University of North Carolina cap.

5. I'm an Eastern Washington University student.
Think you can pick up my tab?

6. I want to kiss you like A-Rod kisses himself.
Do you do HGH?

7. I bowl better than the president.
I might even be able to bowl in the regular people Olympics.

8. I'm a Jedi Master in bed.
In other words, call me Darth Virgin.

9. Put your number on my board, Yes!
Your chances at getting her number are fly, fly away!

10. I'm a ginger. Absolute worst pickup line. ever.

Watchmen's ginger comes through in the clutch

So most gingers are relegated to comical screen roles involving kid delinquency (problem child) or something involving Ron Howard. However, the new superhero movie Watchmen is blazing new ground for Gingers around the globe by displaying a ginger Superhero.

Namely a sociopath ginger hero who actually wears a mask the entire time, and is basically the kid you beat up in high school. But he does get his licks in this movie.

Meet Rorschach, pretty much my favorite movie character right now, even if he is a lunatic.

Played by Jackie Earle Haley, who from what I can gather isn't actually a ginger, Rorschach doesn't seem to have any super powers and is basically the "outcast" hero.

Perfect for a ginger!

He does really drive the plot of the movie, even if he's doing his Christian Bale from Batman voice impression the entire time. Move over Jack Bauer - there's a new sheriff in town.

(PS - go see Watchmen, but only if you have three hours to kill. This movie is one of the best to come out in a lonnnng time but it's also a loooonnngg movie.)
