High School Sports Feature: Shelton Invitational

Yesterday marked the 49th Shelton Invitational in Shelton, Washington. The day was met with rain and a strong breeze.

Oh, and an amazing individual performance on the girls side.

Curtis High School’s Andrea Geubelle came to win. And that she did.

Geubelle, a senior, is the defending 4A State Champion in both the long jump and the triple jump. She won both those events yesterday with 19 feet 0 inches in the long jump and 39 feet 3 1/4 inches in the triple jump.

Both these marks were well behind her season bests though. Her best in the long jump is 19 feet 11 1/2 inches and in the triple jump 41 feet 9 inches. Both these marks rank her in the top 5 nationally.

Geubelle added another gold medal in the 100 meters, finishing in 12.32 seconds.

She also opted to run the 200 meters as a way to add more points for the team competition for Curtis. She finished in 2nd with a time of 25.85 seconds.

Three golds and silver. I'd say that was a successful invitational.

Oh, and an update on the state bests in pole vault. Since I love pole vault.

The best height in the state right now is 15 feet 6 inches. This is held by (Brandon will be happy) two eastside vaulters.

Kyle Brown of Central Valley and Keith Webber of Mead High School both went 15'6" at the Pasco Invitational on April 18th. Brown won the meet.

The second best height (but third best vaulter) is close behind at 15 feet 4 inches. Bryce Borer of Mercer Island High School cleared this height on Saturday, April 25 at the Bellevue Invitational.

There are also two vaulters going 15 feet even. Wes Chamberlain of Ephrata High School and Scott Kolb of Joe Ferris High School.

All five of these boys are seniors.

High School Sports Feature: Islanders Name New Coach

The Islanders of Mercer Island High School have named a successor to Legen......wait for it and I hope you're not lactose intolerant because here it comes....Dary!! boys head basketball coach Ed Pepple. Mercer Islands new head coach will be 5 year assistant (2 years at the Varsity level) Gavin Cree, he is the first new coach for the Islanders in 43 years.

Cree played for the Islanders from 1996-2000 and was a 2 year Varsity letterman. He was on the team that won the 1999 state championship and was the captain of the 2000 squad.

Replacing a Hall of Famer is a large task but Pepple has given Cree a ringing endorsement, calling him " a dyed-in-the-wool Islander"

The task at hand for Gavin Cree is replacing a man who spent 42 years coaching the Islanders and in that time Pepple compiled 880 victories (952 total wins with his time at Fife High School) and 4 state championships. You can read more about Ed Pepple here
