Wyoming Cowboys football

Now I'd love to root for Wyoming as my father-in-law graduated from there. But no matter how hard I try I just find it very hard.

Let's look at the facts for the Wyoming football team:

1. You get your butts kicked every year in the Mountain West.

2. You have some terrible uniforms.

Yes, that picture is for real. You give Nike the keys to your uniforms and you quickly become the Oregon Ducks of the Midwest. That's nine, yes NINE different uniform combinations. Some jerseys say "WYO" some helmets are brown with a brown logo and one uniform is all yellow. YIKES!

3. You play in Wyoming.

4. The uniforms. Yes, they are that bad they get mentioned TWICE!

5. Oh, and your "official" theme song for the season is terrible. This is not a joke. This is the Wyoming Cowboys football team's theme song for the season.

Taken straight from the Wyoming Cowboys football youtube channel.

And with dumb songs like that, and hideous uniforms, Wyoming wonders why they have a hard time recruiting?

Eastern Washington vs Washington game an NCAA must see

The national exposure for Eastern Washington University just keeps coming. NCAA.com has now previewed the game as a "must-see matchup."

From NCAA.com:

Eastern Washington’s first game action since winning the FCS championship will be its inaugural matchup against Washington at Seattle's Husky Stadium on Sept. 3.

It’s a must-watch game for Evergreen State football fans; seven players -- four Eagles and three Huskies -- are on various preseason watch lists:

• Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and wide receiver Brandon Kaufman are on the 20-player watch list for the Walter Payton Award, given annually to the top FCS player.

• EWU safety Matt Johnson and defensive tackle Renard Williams are on the 20-player watch list for the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top FCS defensive player.

• Washington running back Chris Polk, who is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday, is on the watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award as well as the Maxwell and Doak Walker awards.

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian has not ruled out Polk possibly playing in the season opener, but said this was the best time to have the procedure done. “We don’t know. It depends on his body and how he recovers,” said Sarkisian, who finished 7-6 last year, including a 19-7 victory against Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl, UW’s first bowl since 2002. “But I think for the long haul of this thing it was the right thing to do.

“It’s not serious but I just didn’t want it to linger and I thought the doctors handled it really well, and let’s just do it now so we are not dealing with this thing come October, November,” Sarkisian added. “It potentially could be a couple of weeks but I think he already feels good about it.”

The Walker Award is given annually to the nation’s top college running back; the Maxwell Award has been presented to the nation’s top player since 1937.

• Huskies defensive lineman Alameda Ta’amu is on the Nagurski, Bednarik, Outland watch lists.

The Bednarik Award is given to the best defensive player in the country; the Outland Trophy goes to the nation’s best interior linemen on both sides of the ball; the Nagurski Award is presented to the best defensive player in college football.

• UW kicker Erik Folk is on the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, presented annually to the nation’s top kicker.

As for the teams, Eastern Washington edged Montana State as the preseason pick by both the coaches and the media to win the Big Sky title.

The Eagles open the season with three consecutive road games, including non-conference games at Washington and South Dakota, then the Big Sky opener at Montana, which last season failed to advance to the FCS playoffs for the first time since 1992.

“We know darn well that it is hard,” EWU head coach Beau Baldwin said of replicating the success his team had in 2010. “It is hard work in the offseason. It’s hard work to win the non-conference games we have on our schedule. And it’s hard to win any Big Sky Conference game, let alone trying to win the league title.

“It starts over again no matter what it says on paper and whatever comments are made that we look better entering 2011 than we did in 2010,” added Baldwin, whose team returns 15 starters and 52 lettermen from last season’s team that finished 13-2.

“That doesn’t matter in terms of the success we have on the field. Our players are very mature in handling that and understand we still have to work hard and look for short-term goals.”

Washington was picked to finish third -- behind Oregon and Stanford -- in the North Division in the inaugural Pac-12 preseason poll.

Sarkisian, entering his third season at the Huskies' helm, said one of his preseason goals is continuing the physicality with which UW won the final four games of 2010. "We've got to play lower football, better pad-level football, to be the physical football team I think we can be," he said.

I can't wait for this game! And yes, I'll be there keeping fans updated from a fan's perspective through twitter.

Are you ready for Jeff Tuel to be WSU's savior?

Casey will brag and brag about his Huskies, meanwhile the Washington State Cougars might have the biggest ace up their sleeves and that's junior quarterback Jeff Tuel...

PULLMAN - As a true sophomore last season, Jeff Tuel completed nearly 60-percent of his passes for nearly 2,800 yards and 18 touchdowns. But the Cougars' coaching staff believes this will be his breakout season.

"He's done everything we've asked him to do and more," said head coach Paul Wulff. "Just more command of everything. More leadership. Bigger. Stronger."

"He's at a whole other level right now, going into fall camp, than he was a year ago," added offensive coordinator Todd Sturdy. "And, you know, that's just because of all the value he got out of playing last year, all twelve games."

I'd be on the Jeff Tuel wagon if he wasn't behind an offensive line that was less effective than the exhausdt vent defenses on the Death Star. What has been the common theme throughout the past few seasons? Physical domination by the other team.

Unless Wulff fields a much bigger team this year in terms of size, I think it will be the same result.

What is Paul Wulff saying in this photo?

"Stick with me and this team and you'll probably be playing for a new coach next year."

"The best teams sometimes finish last or in our case, always finish last."

"We're not as bad as you think we are. We just don't win very many games."

"Anyone got UW to win the Pac-12 in a conference gambling pool?"

"Remember, the Cougars used to be good at football. With the emphasis being on 'used to'"

"If you party and get drunk, I don't care, because it will probably help you deal with the pain on Saturdays."

"Good news, Jake Locker isn't on the Huskies anymore."

"The bad news is... a bunch of other Div. I-A football players are."

"Sooo if you would, send out my resume to anyone you know..."

Chase Reynolds signs with the Rams

Its already been a thrilling NFL career for Montana's Chase Reynolds. He's been signed by the Seahawks, cut and then signed by the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams signed Reynolds, who scored 59 touchdowns for the University of Montana from 2008-10, on Wednesday. This is according to a Twitter post from Reynolds' agent, Marc Lillibridge.

Reynolds was signed by the Seahawks last week and appeared in one NFL exhibition game, netting 8 yards on six carries in Seattle's 24-17 win over San Diego Thursday. The Seahawks released him Sunday.

Do you think Montana fans have Taiwan Jones envy?

Casey went kayaking and it ended badly...

So Casey decided to take a kayaking trip last weekend with his dad and wife and things didn't go all that well...

You'll also note Casey's bald spot.

Eastern Washington ranked No. 1 in preseason football polls

Things are already shaping up nicely for the Eastern Washington Eagles and they haven't even played a game yet. The Sports Network has them ranked No. 1 in the preseason FCS poll ahead of Appalachian State. The MSU Bobcats were also ranked sixth.

The Montana Grizzlies were ranked No. 12, and Sac State was No. 24. In other words, the Big Sky Conference is STACKED.

See the full poll here.

Dan Uggla's 33-game hitting streak is over

That's right ladies and gentlemen, you can turn off the "Joe DiMaggio's hitting record is in jeopardy" alarms off. The mighty Dan Uggla just couldn't get it done 33 games in.

ATLANTA -- Dan Uggla was quick to acknowledge he never thought he'd have a hitting streak as long as 33 games.

His streak was the longest in the majors in five years. He was 0-for-3 with an RBI on Sunday.

"That's more games than I thought I would ever have," Uggla said.

While Uggla-madness was quickly taking over, people can now burn their Dan Uggla replica jerseys because it's officially over. It was the longest hitting streak in five years in the majors. Philadelphia's Chase Utley had a 35-game hitting streak in 2006 and I'm pretty sure the Mariners have gotten a hit or two here or there in that time period.

Couldn't Obama at least get him a Favre jersey?

You know you're in Washington when...

Having been away for the Evergreen State for so long, I definitely noticed a few things when I came back that make our wonderful state so wonderful....

1. Lattes cost $4
Our coffee is expensive because it's good, dammit. We pride ourselves on the number of Starbucks in the block radius. Meanwhile all the other states have to make due with their knock-off coffee shops that are located in either a run-down building or a Safeway. Viva la Washington Coffee!

2. We're pretty bad at driving
Ah, Spokane, you never stop to amaze me with you're wonderful examples of driving. It's probably the only place in the United States where stoplights are suggestions and homeless people are 100 points if you hit them.

3. Everybody around here says "Warshington"
It's true, while we may talk to out-of-staters and say "Washington State" everyone knows that if you say "Warshington"... you're talking about at least the 509 area code and we can lump in the west side too because I know there are a bunch of Issaquah people that call it "Warshington."

4. Our crazy people are interesting
Sure every place has its share of crazies, but Washington takes the cake. Where else can you see a guy dressed in a purple jump suit twirl a purple umbrella? Where else can you see two homeless people riding a bike and buggy (designed for small infants)? Where else do you get told about the aliens inside somebody's head on the STA bus? Yep. Washington.

Angels and Airwaves "Anxiety"

One of my favorite bands of all time is Angels and Airwaves. I've been following them since their debut album dropped back in 2005.

I saw them live when they came to Seattle last year too.

Well the band is set to release a new album later this year and the first single was released on Wednesday. Titled "Anxiety" it's pure Angels and Airwaves.

Check it out:

I'm back from the dead!

Sorry folks it's been a crazy couple of weeks for me, but I should be back in action on the blog a lot more. Thanks to Casey for keeping this thing going, and I should be back to my old posting self in no time!

Idaho State's new football field

Idaho State got a new field for the 2011 football season.

Here's a neat time-lapse video of the installation.

But after seeing Eastern Washington go 8-0 on the Inferno at Roos Field, I'm surprised they didn't make it orange.

Amy Parks from AAMI Park

You know the news producers chuckled to themselves as they sent her to cover the story.

Channel Seven News on Sunday covered the sacking of Melbourne Demons AFL coach Dean Bailey by sending reporter Amy Parks to AAMI Park.

Team HTC-Highroad to disband after season

This is some very unfortunate and sad news coming from the cycling world. Cycling team HTC-Highroads will be disbanding at the end of the season.

Top professional cycling team HTC-Highroad is folding after five years in the sport following an unsuccessful effort to secure a long-term sponsor.

Team owner Bob Stapleton announced the decision Thursday, urging riders such as 20-time Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish of Britain, top time trialist Tony Martin of Germany and up-and-coming American Tejay van Garderen to find new teams for 2012.

The American squad has been one of pro cycling’s most successful since it was formed, winning 484 races, including 54 grand tour stages.

Stapleton said the team’s “success has been based on our outstanding people” and he was making the decision to disband the team now so that they could find teams in 2012.

I hate to see any team disband but especially a extremely successful, American team.
