Washington Huskies Weekly Update: KryptoNate!

Welcome back to the AP top 25 Dawgs. After being left out of last weeks top 25 the Huskies make a return this week at number 22. This after beating the Oregon schools at home (Oregon State Beavers 79-60 on Thursday, Oregon Ducks 103-84 on Saturday), both by 19 points. UW is in first place in the Pac-10 by a full game over the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Justin Dentmon continued his great play of late by scoring a total of 49 points and handing out 9 assists in the two games. Also in the Oregon game 4 of the 5 starters scored at least 20 points (Quincy Pondexter 20, Jon Brockman 21, Isaiah Thomas 24 and Dentmon 21).

Ex-Huskies also did pretty well over the NBA's All Star weekend with Nate Robinson winning the dunk contest in his all green suit of kryptonite over Superman Dwight Howard. Brandon Roy went for 14 points (on 7 of 8 shooting), 5 rebounds and 5 assists in Sundays All-Star game.

This week the Huskies face UCLA and USC both on the road. If they can pull off victories in both of those games that will put them in great position to win the Pac-10. After this weeks road games the Dawgs have the remaining 4 regular season games at home.

Morrison to Lakers

This just came over the AP a few hours ago.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Bobcats traded managing partner Michael Jordan's first draft pick on Saturday, sending struggling forward Adam Morrison and reserve guard Shannon Brown to the Los Angeles Lakers for forward Vladimir Radmanovic.

Jordan's first major decision after becoming part owner with the final say on all basketball decisions was taking Morrison with the third overall pick in the 2006 draft over Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay and others.

Morrison was known for his shaggy hair, and terrible mustache, while playing for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Unfortunately, unlike Roy, Morrison never lived up to the hype that surrounded him in college.

Morrison, who cut his trademark hair short before this season, will get a chance to crack the Lakers' rotation and become an outside scoring threat. Morrison, who averaged a national-best 28.1 points for Gonzaga in 2005-06, missed all of last season after tearing a knee ligament in a preseason game.

Morrison, due about $5.3 million next season in the final year of his rookie contract, was averaging just 4.5 points while shooting 36 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.

Roy sure made the state of Washington proud. We'll see if Morrison (aka the overly cocky kid from Spokane) can do the same finally.

Washington Weekly Update: Pac-10 Leaders

Five in a row. That's how many straight the Huskies have won over the UCLA Bruins in Seattle. That is also the number of current wins in a row the Huskies will have if they beat Arizona when they travel down to Tucson for a meeting with the Wildcats on Thursday night.

The Huskies just wrapped up a great week in hoops with an 86-75 victory over the boys from Westwood on Saturday (Women's swimming also took down UCLA on Saturday). Earlier in the week they slid by the Men of Troy 78-73 as well as retiring the jersey of the great Brandon Roy. Not too shabby I'd say.

Don't look now but these Dawgs are barking, especially after getting taken behind the woodshed by the Kansas Jayhawks in late November. Since that embarrassing defeat the Washington Huskies have gone 13-2, and the 2 defeats were by a combined 5 points (86-84 loss to the Florida Tebows and a 3 OT heart breaker to the Cal Bears).

This is a new week for the Huskies which I hope brings the same results of this past week....victory. Arizona and Arizona State are on the docket for this last week of January followed by a Northern California swing versus Cal and then Stanford.

Roy Oh Roy!

Last night the Washington Huskies retired the second number ever in the teams 107 year history and just the 30th number retired in the Pac-10. That was the number 3 worn by Brandon Roy who now joins Bob Houbregs in the rafters.

Roy's journey to this point didn't start out all sunshine and farts though. When Roy first enrolled at UW his SAT scores weren't high enough to get past the dreaded NCAA clearinghouse (not to be confused with the Publishers). After taking the test again and passing, then having the clearinghouse reject him because of how much better his score was, he had to take it.....again. The results were lost, then found and he was finally on his way to an amazing career at UW. In his senior year Roy averaged 20.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game and was an All-American and named Pac-10 Player of the Year.

Now Roy is tearing it up for our neighbors down south the Portland Trail Blazers. Roy has been in the City of Roses now for about 2 1/2 seasons and has already posted a 50 point game (52 against the Phoenix Suns), been an All-Star and won Rookie of the Year honors.

It is great to see a local product who went to Garfield High, enroll at our local University of Washington and go on to become a great NBA player and a great person.

Oh yeah, and the Huskies beat the USC Trojans 78-73!! Great night.

So about that whole Oden being the franchise savior thing

Nothing against Oden, he's been a solid contributor for the Portland Trailblazers during their 17-10 start this season. However, we may have been a bit off with the whole franchise savior thing because that's actually Brandon Roy.

That's pretty clear after Roy dropped 52 points against the Phoenix Suns on Thursday Night.

Quickly and silently he's becoming one of the best guards in the league and NOBODY saw this coming. Seriously, where are the "Here comes Brandon Roy!" articles? Even Skip Bayless couldn't even deny this complete meltdown in media ignorance.

If you watch a Blazers game, count how many time the announcers gush over Roy, because the man seems like he's making plays everywhere on the court even when he's sitting on the bench. The great thing about the NBA is that there are players that you just like watching play, simply because it's enjoyable, and Roy is one of those guys.

Just warning you all in advance, in case you were too busy watching Kobe Bryant bite his lip and ignore teammates.
