FCU: Fact Checkers Unit

“Friday Night Lights” star Zach Gilford is the latest celebrity to get checked in the NBC Universal Digital Studios series "FCU: Fact Checkers Unit".

"FCU: Fact Checkers Unit" is an eight episode digital series based on a short film of the same name and reunites the three creators; original cast members Peter Karinen and Brian Sacca and director Dan Beers. It also features a recurring appearance by actress Kristen Schaal (“Flight of the Conchords”).

"FCU: Fact Checkers Unit" follows the adventures of two overzealous fact checkers – Russell (Karinen) and Dylan (Sacca) – who work at the popular Dictum magazine and stop at nothing to check the most absurd celebrity facts. No star is too big and no fact too obscure or arcane to run down for accuracy’s sake. Tom Bannister is the executive producer of the series from SXM and Beers directs.

Upcoming episodes will feature guest stars Alex Trebek (“Jeopardy”), Dave Navarro (“Jane’s Addiction”), Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”) and Pauley Perrette (“NCIS”).

JustSON Friday Night Lights Edition

We're starting a new Friday feature here at JustSON. We're going to be previewing the big games according to the Tacoma News Tribune. We'll show you their picks for the games, and then we'll give you ours.

Huge high school football game out in Sammamish, Washington tonight. I live just down the road from Skyline and have gone to some games last year. They are impressive. Here's the Tacoma News Tribunes take on the game tonight:

Oaks Christian (Calif.) at No. 1 Skyline, 7 p.m. today
Plenty of star power here – before getting to celebrities in the stands. Some recruiting experts consider Skyline QB Jake Heaps the top prep quarterback in the country. Oaks Christian QB Nick Montana, son of NFL legend Joe Montana, has given an oral commitment to Washington. Some of Montana’s teammates have equally famous fathers in Wayne Gretzky and Will Smith, who are expected to be in attendance. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Oaks Christian is ranked No. 6 in USA Today’s Super 25; Skyline is No. 17.

The TNT Pick: Skyline 24, Oaks Christian 23. Home-field advantage favors Skyline.

The JustSON Pick: Oaks Christian 28, Skyline 21. The stars are in line for Oaks Christian tonight, and it's too much for Heaps. This will be Heaps first loss in high school.

Unlikely Titantic Second-ranked Lakes travels to White River for an unlikely meeting of undefeated SPSL 3A teams tonight. The Lancers (2-0, 2-0) are sitting atop the standings, and the surprising Hornets (2-0, 2-0) are right there with them. After going 1-9 last season, White River has outscored Franklin Pierce and Sumner by a total of 65-28.

The JustSON pick: Sadly, I see Lakes winning in a blowout.

The Bang Bang Club

I got my new issue of Outside Magazine in the mail today and the cover features Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The article was about him fly fishing in Texas, but what really caught my attention in the article is the part about one of his up coming movies about The Bang Bang Club.

Now unless you know photojournalism, chances are you've never heard of the Bang Bang Club. And the same chances are even less that you will have heard of Kevin Carter. Kitsch will be playing Carter in the movie.

Carter is best known for his Pulitzer Prize winning photograph I've posted above. The photo features a small Sudanese toddler on the ground. She is suffering from famine and a vulture is standing watch behind.

I have a feeling that this movie will be released in very select theaters. Much like one of my favorite movies (and best movies of all time) Into The Wild.

Despite the small-scale theater release, Into The Wild, and the story of Christopher McCandless, has drawn praise and awards worldwide.

I believe that, even before seeing it, Steven Silver will do the same with The Bang Bang Club.

Here's the synopsis of the film:

The Bang Bang Club was the name given to four young photographers; Greg Marinovich (Ryan Phillippe), Kevin Carter (Taylor Kitsch), Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa. Two were awarded Pulitzer Prizes for their acclaimed work.

The film tells the remarkable and sometimes harrowing story of these young men - and the extraordinary extremes they went to in order to capture their pictures. Anna (Malin Akerman) is their photo-editor, who looked out for them, protected them and made sure their photographs were seen across the world.

Based on the book by Marinovich and Silva, The Bang Bang Club tells the true story of these four young men, recounting their relationships with each other and the stresses, tensions and moral dilemmas of working in situations of extreme violence, pain and suffering.

The story of these four photojournalists is heart-wrenching and is sure to make an incredible journey across the big screen. The film is set to be released sometime in 2010.

Friday Night Lights coming back on NBC

I love high school football. Therefore I love shows about high school football.

I don't watch much television, but there is once show that I watch faithfully and that is NBC's Friday Night Lights.

Well, good news for me because a source close to the studio has released that NBC has signed on for two more 13-episode seasons going through 2010-11.

"Friday Night Lights," a Texas football-and-family drama starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, has struggled in the ratings but has been a critical bright spot for NBC, drawing consistently good reviews and Emmy and Peabody awards.

You might remember Kyle Chandler from Early Edition. Early Edition was about a guy who got the newspaper one day early. He would then try to stop the bad events that were going to happen. All the while with people thinking he was simply crazy. It was on the air from 1996-2000.
