Epic Video: Albino Squirrel

This is awesome. Except this squirrel has got to have a hard time hiding every season but winter.

Missing flags found

Here at Just South of North we like squirrels. They are funny little creatures. And they are resourceful.

Take the squirrel that lived in the trees of the cemetery in Port Huron, Michigan.

Every Memorial Day the workers of the cemetery place over 1,000 mini American flags next to the graves of the veterans.

Well, some of the workers were noticing that a few of the flags had gone missing. The little wooden poles they had been attached too were still there, but the flags were on to be found.

Then the superintendent of the cemetery saw the culprit in action. A squirrel came down and detached a flag from the post and carried it up to a nest.

And I'm sure those little flags will make good blankets for the baby squirrels.

This photo is of a young gray squirrel. Isn't it cute?

Don't mess with a mom and her baby

I spend a lot of my time in the outdoors. So much that the only "house" I actually own is a tent. But there is one thing that I learned at a very young age and that is NEVER get between a mother and her baby.

I came across an article in the Ann Arbor News in which a teacher learned this the hard way. While touring the University of Michigan campus, the teacher saw a mother squirrel and her babies. She then noticed that one of the babies had fallen behind and a crow was taking interest in the young squirrel.

After an attempt to scare the crow failed, the teacher tried to get the mother squirrels attention. Instead, the mother took this as a threat to her babies and attacked. (roll Jaws music)

The teacher fell and was scratched on her leg. She ended up getting on her bus and going to the hospital.

Now, a squirrel doesn't exactly seem like the nastiest of creatures. They are so cute and fluffy. But no matter what the creature is, never get between a mom and her baby. Here are the top 10 animals I'd never want to be between:

10. Pigeon - They'd cover me in poop.

9. Wolf - Especially if their kid was Mowgli.

8. Badgers - Kinda like really big, meaner squirrels.

7. Penguin - Well I thought squirrels would be harmless. These flightless birds are cute too. The mom would probably eat me.

6. Pig - She'd think I was there to turn her and her baby into bacon. Fear is never good.

5. Slug - So much slime!

4. Hawk - Have you seen those claws?!?!

3. Big foot - She would crush me.

2. Kangaroo - Not only would she punch me to an inch of my lift, but when I was there, she would start kicking me with those large, powerful feet.

1. Grizzly Bear - She would crush me. Then eat me. Then crush me again.

What's a group called?

Everyone knows that a bunch of birds is called a "flock."

And everyone knows that a bunch of fish is called a "school."

But what are some other groups of items called?

Well thank you University of California for allowing me to check this list on your Web site.

Here are some of the best:

  • A fluther of jellyfish - the reason Brandon avoids the ocean at all costs.
  • A neverthriving of jugglers - so a circus?
  • A mob of kangaroos - better yet, boxing kangaroos!
  • A bevy of ladies - the reason Brandon and I go to the ocean.
  • A number of mathematicians - a.k.a nerds.
  • A company of moles - they wear suits.
  • A tribe of monkeys - I like monkeys.
  • A barren of mules - a.k.a. frat guys.
  • A superfluity of nuns - nuns do seem to travel in groups...err...I mean in superfluities.
  • A parliament of owls - owls are smart.
  • A huddle of penguins - they huddle to stay warm.
  • A gaze of raccoons - I like raccoons and monkeys.
  • An unkindness of ravens - they are like the emo kids of the bird family.
  • A clutter of spiders - RAID.
  • An ambush of tigers - yes, I'm sure tigers are trying to ambush me. Now walk away slowly.
  • A bale of turtles - It's actually a rectangle block of turtles. Like a bale of hay.
  • A blessing of unicorns - I've never seen ONE unicorn, let alone a BLESSING of them.
  • An ugly of walruses - walruses are ugly, oh, and also the reason Brandon avoids the ocean.
  • A descent of woodpeckers - Woody Woodpecker.
  • A crash of rhinoceroses - because they crash through everything.
  • A dray of squirrels - I like squirrels, raccoons and monkeys!
