College football roundup - yep, the Cougs still stink

#13 Oregon 24, UCLA 10 - I watched this game until I realized that this was the dullest game of the season. Don't let the score fool you, this was a snoozer on the biggest of levels. Can you say run, run, run, punt?

#21 Nebraska 27, #24 Missouri 12 - WHAT! Nebraska coming through in a semi-big game? You don't say. However, please keep in mind that this still isn't an upset and Nebraska was suppose to win this game. Don't get all sold on the Huskers just yet (or ever).

#1 Florida 13, #4 LSU 3 - This looked like the biggest stumbling block on the Gators' schedule but thank God that even though Tim Tebow can't watch TV due to his concussion, he can play football.

Colorado 14, #2 Texas 38 - Here come the Buffaloes!

Florida A&M 16, #11 Miami 48 - Before you call this a cupcake game, keep in mind that FAM was 4-0 coming into this game! Sure it was in the MEAC, a conference for schools that apparently weren't let into the NAIA but hey! Go Miami.

E. Illinois 3, #14 Penn St. 52 - Another tough game for the Lions. They keep scheduling such tough teams.

#22 Georgia Tech 49, Florida State 44 - FSU is 2-4 for the first time since Bobby Bowden began collecting Social Security.

Duke 49, NCST 28 - How bout them Blue Devils! Boy, the Wolfpack sucks...

Idaho 29, San Jose State 25 - Ladies and gentlemen, you're 5-1 Vandals. You know Paul Wulff wants you to watch the Vandals after UI gave Rob Akey three years to rebuild the team. Three years, that means you shouldn't fire Wulff after this season. Look at the Vandals, on top of the world, that will be the Cougs next year...

Arizona St. 27, WSU 14 - .... or not. 180 yards of offense (one play was for 90) doesn't exactly scream "improvement."

Arizona 33, Washington 36 - The Huskies beat an unranked team! THEYRE BACK! THEYRE GOING TO WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Just wait folks! Here comes Jake Locker! Here comes Coach Sark! Might as well hand the Pac-10 over to the purple and gold!

Wait, they're 3-3? Well I haven't seen an overreaction like that since the team was ranked in the top 25 after beating USC. Oh.. too soon?

THE EWU SCORE WILL NOT BE DISCLOSED BECAUSE I WOULD THROW MY MOUSE THROUGH THE COMPUTER SCREEN.

Vandals are awesome. No really, they are.

Nobody saw this coming, and I mean NOBODY. The Idaho Vandals are atop the WAC conference after jumping out to their best start in recent memory with a victory over San Jose State.

The Vandals (5-1, 2-0 in the WAC) were able to muster the decisive scoring drive with Enderle on the bench and backup Brian Reader under center. Reader completed his only pass attempt — a crucial 11-yarder to Eric Greenwood. But the last march was all about a rushing attack that was money most of the night. The Vandals ran seven straight times after Reader’s completion, and punctuated the winning drive with a stirring DeMaundray Woolridge 5-yard TD run.

Woolridge is quickly becoming one of the most clutch performers Idaho has had in a LONG time. He has eight touchdowns through six games, and he’s averaging 6.0 yards per carry behind a stellar offensive line. (Princeton McCarty is also shining behind that line as well.)

Now, what does this mean? For starters, Idaho is alone atop the WAC with a 2-0 record. And it’s one win from locking up a bowl berth. That victory could very well come against Hawaii.

Boise State better be worried...

Actual ebay item: HUGE Tumbleweed from Eastern Washington

I typed in "eastern washington" into ebay and pushed enter.

This is what I found:

HUGE Tumbleweed from the Eastern Washington desert in the great northwest.
This tumbleweed is so big it barely fits in an 18 x 18 x 24 box and will be shipped by USPS parcel post oversize
The picture is of the actual item you will receive.

Here are the actual screen shots of the page. Only 2 hours left, but you can view it here.

Vandals get some play in the Boston Globe

People are starting to take notice of the plucky Idaho Vandals, which have shown signs of revival with a 4-1 record going into today's game against San Jose State. Boston.com has this little nugget on them...

Looking for a feel-good team? Look to Moscow. Moscow, Idaho, that is. The Idaho Vandals are making some noise in the Western Athletic Conference, off to a 4-1 start and looking to steal a little thunder from Boise State. Idaho, which was an abysmal 3-21 the past two seasons, stunned Colorado State at the Kibbie Dome last week and is led by quarterback Nathan Enderle (1,293 yards, 8 TDs) and tailback DeMaundray Woolridge (56 rushes, 357 yards, 6 TDs). The Vandals’ loss came at Washington in Week 2. Idaho visits San Jose State tomorrow, and coach Robb Akey’s team has a shot at being 10-1 when it travels to Boise’s blue turf Nov. 14

Found this on Huckleberries Online. I'm really glad people are starting to get behind the Vandals because they deserve the support after years of being terrible. If you like rooting for the little guy, throw away that UW jersey and get Vandalized because here comes Idaho!

I can't believe I was actually watching the UFL

The most anticipated... errrr ... minor football league since the XFL kicked off last night. Much to my surprise DAVE SIMS was doing the broadcast on Versus, meaning this league should be earmarked for plenty of overexcited calls on plays that don't really mean a whole lot. Kordell Stewart was doing some sideline reporting and he kind of reminded me of a slightly cracked out Spokie asking for change on the streets of Spokane.

Here's the game story from last night.

LAS VEGAS — J.P. Losman threw two touchdowns passes and Dede Dorsey scored twice to help the Las Vegas Locomotives win the first game in United Football League history, 30-17 over the California Redwoods on Thursday night.

A crowd of 14,209 fans attended the game at 40,000-seat Sam Boyd Stadium.

Keep in mind that even the XFL sold out its first game and that lasted only a single season. As far as the play goes it seems to go back and forth between terrible and decent. The uniforms look like they were intended for people taking acid. The production values seem a little cheap and no-thrills. One thing they do have going for it is that they have all the games streaming live over the internet for free.

Isiah Trufant, formerly of the Spokane Shock and the Eastern Washington Eagles, played for Las Vegas but I didn't actually see if he got into the game or made any tackles at DB. And I can't find a box score... so... lame.

Overall, I don't know if this is going to last longer than the XFL. But I may try out for it!

Not what I want to see

Last night the Red Sox had some decent pitching, but the absence of any offense whatsoever resulted in a 5-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS. Ack. I know it's just the first game of a five-game series but what worries me isn't the guys that take the mound - Beckett, Lester and Dice-K are a formidable starting pitching lineup, middle relief is okay and Papelbon is still one of the premier closers in the game.

However, you can't win games if you can't score runs and the Red Sox have shown their inability to score runs at times during the season. Tonight's game against Los Angeles is a must-win and then we'll see what happens when they go back to Boston. Hopefully the bats decide to wake up.

Am I nervous? Yes. Very Nervous.

Casey's guide to surviving a zombie invasion

Perhaps you've seen Casey's videos "The Northern Rangers" where he goes around doing amazing hikes, bike rides and even a little spelunking. While thats all fine and dandy, he forgot to convert his plan of surviving a zombie invasion to video.

You see, Casey plans for everything, including the the rising of the undead.

Step 1 - Do away with zombie fiancee. (She was actually a zombie before the invasion started)

Step 2 - Gather Supplies... Shotguns. Flares. A large assortment of sharp things. A can of Raid. Google Phone. Windows Vista. A copy of Season 1 of How I Met Your Mother. Bible. Holy Water. More Shotguns. Dynamite. Portable NES.

Step 3 - Find a suitable fortress to fight against the Zombie Invasion.

(That will totally do. AWESOME....)

Step 4 - Do away with lifeless corpses in the stadium that could potentially turn into zombies...

Step 5 - Recruit group of zombie-fighting survivors...

1. Bill O'Reilly - because who would want to eat his brains?
2. Mike Tyson - he's accustomed to things that bite human flesh.
3. Randy Johnson - did you see what he did to that bird?
4. Jenna Jamison - she knows a thing or two about handling stiff, scary looking things.
5. Paul Wulff - he's been dealing with zombies the entire football season.

Step 6 - Wait for this guy to kill all the zombies...

ZOMBIE INVASION OVER.

Epic Video: Brandon?

I'm pretty sure this is Brandon from last year's Halloween party.

Umm.....yeah.

A great article from the TNT

I read this article today in the Tacoma News Tribune. If you have a minute check it out, it is well worth the read.

Tacoma man's dream may finally see life afloat

Marge Simpson in playboy

The Simpsons are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. And to celebrate, Marge is taking it all off.

Seriously.

I heard this on the radio this afternoon and thought it was a joke. But nope:

Sources tell E! Online's Mark Malkin today that Marge Simpson, that blue-haired bundle of pent-up sexual energy, will be naked on the November cover of Playboy magazine to mark the 20th anniversary of "The Simpsons."

This is something that Hugh Hefner had teased Twitter followers in August. "Marge Simpson has a surprise for her fans in the November issue of Playboy," he tweeted.

Marge will apparently get her own three-page pictorial inside, though there will still be a human Playmate featured in the issue, too.

Oh gosh. What is this world coming too?

Baseball fans are more money-grubbing than the players

After listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio this morning spar with words against Joe Blow American over this Ryan Howard/Phillies lawsuit, it makes me think that this country is just full of a bunch of overweight losers looking for the best way to make money quick.

When 12-year-old Jennifer Valdivia caught the Philadelphia Phillies' Ryan Howard's 200th career home run earlier this summer, it sparked a legal battle. The Phillies approached the girl immediately after her catch, and traded it for a signed, regular ball. Her attorney, Norm Kent, sued Monday for Valdivia to get back the original ball. By Monday afternoon, the ball was hers again. Kent shares the story.

Cowherd took the viewpoint that basically players don't like fans for this reason... many are just looking to profit from them. After hearing call after call from people complaining saying "Oh that ball could put my kids through college" or "I'm a truck driver and I need the money" ... I've come to the conclusion that Americans are morons.

They actually view going to a baseball game as a capitalist venture. I've seen this first hand with jock sniffers hanging around the Spokane Indians ballpark trying to sell guy's first professional home run ball at a significant markup. Or stealing bats from the RACKS IN THE DUGOUT and selling them online. No joke, these are the kind of people that go to baseball games.

Cowherd further went on saying that if he were a professional athlete he wouldn't sign any autographs for people over the age of 30. Why? Cause they're going to take that ball and make a profit.

People went crazy. "It's our right!" "It's capitalism!" "Those players make millions of dollars, what does it matter to them that I profit off of them!"

If you seriously plan on making something of a living or any financial game by leeching off of professional athletes, I really feel you should be just locked in your mom's basement. There are some serious issues with the priorities of people if they see this as a way to make financial gains.

Back to the Howard story. That ball means something to Howard. The girl GAVE THE BALL BACK TO HIM. And all of a sudden there's a lawsuit (probably by her parents. Not sure how many 12-year olds file lawsuits). Now this ball probably is not going to fetch a whole lot of money on the open market, because the only real big money balls are things like Bonds milestone home runs or something that has to do with Mark McGwire. This is a case where the ball means more to the ballplayer than the kid who would probably lose it in the yard a few weeks later. The kid gave it back, Phillies actually treated her very nicely and then her parents though they might profit off a lawsuit.

Disgusting. You people make me sick. Go back to Walmart where you buy stuff, use it and then return it in 30 days.

Pigs.

Breaking News! Tim Tebow is doing fine

All you Florida Gator fans out there might be slightly worried about Tim Tebow starting this weekend. No worries, even though Urban Meyer has said that it will be a game day decision, he also said that Tebow looks better than he's ever see him.

Since we're pretty powerful here at Just South of North, here's an exclusive first photo of Tim Tebow this week preparing for the game...

Hooray! Don't be worried at all Gators fans!

Epic Photo: Perhaps they should have just lost to the Tigers

You beat the Detroit Tigers in a thrilling tie-breaker game and then lose the first playoff game to the Yankees 7-2? Surely, you would want to do better than that against the Evil Empire! I'm slightly terrified now.

Twins... Don't give the Yankees any sort of momentum in the playoffs because you've seen the results... large, ham sandwich eating men with XXXXL Derek Jeter jerseys suddenly walking around with a little more pep in their step.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

New Ring detected around Saturn

We all know Saturn has rings. Well apparently, they found an new ring, this one being the biggest in the solar system in terms of planetary rings. Jupiter must be jealous.

An enormous halo of dust that circles Saturn and dwarfs its more familiar rings has been discovered by astronomers.

The ring, the largest in the solar system, surrounds the planet from a distance of 8m miles, about 50 times further out than the others.

It is also unusual in that it wraps the planet at an angle of roughly 27 degrees, while the planet's other rings surround the equator.

Anne Verbiscer, research scientist at the University of Virginia, said that if the ring were visible from Earth, it would be twice the size of the full moon.

"There's nothing else like it in the solar system. You could fit a billion Earths inside it," she said.

While Saturn's regular rings are only metres thick, the new one is around 1.55m miles thick.

Much like Americans, the waistline of Saturn seems to be expanding...

Are you ready for the baseball playoffs?

Will CC Sabathia have more wins than Burger King Quads eaten?

Will the Red Sox show more personality than the Sunday comic Dilbert?

Will the Metrodome collapse in on itself as it's officially become the black hole of sports where no major professional sports league can escape it's influence. Can we host the NBA Finals there just to ensue that it goes out with a bang as if Favre beating the Packers and a tie-breaker game wasn't enough?

Is Manny lactating again?

How many "Here come the Rockies!" articles will be written before they're swept by the Phillies in the playoffs?

Find out, because the MLB playoffs start today!

(A warning to everyone that knows me. You will probably not see me out in public as I'll be firmly planted on my couch for the next few weeks)

Um... well this is embarrassing.

Photos from last night's epic baseball game

So Minnesota beat Detroit 5-6 in a one-game tiebreaker for the AL Central Division title and a crack at the seemingly invincible New York Yankees. Here are some pictures from that epic battle last night...

I don't mean to be gross here, but I'm pretty sure this is the exact same thing that groupies see at the end of the night.

What do you mean I'm not playing in the World Cup?

"RAWWWRRR!!! Haha scared you! That's what I do. Because I'm big. And scary."

"Man this Riverdance thing really sucks"

"Well now that everyone left, I'll just sprawl out here and take a nap. Times are tough and I just live in the MetroDome now. Has an excellent big screen television"

Many hefty bags were killed in the making of this dome.

"What a minute... you're not Brett Favre... DAMMIT!"

What wasn't caught after this photo was him curling up in a ball, sucking his thumb and refusing to leave the playing field until he was given his orange slices and Capri Sun.

"So I paid this guy 20 bucks to carry me around. Yeah, these unemployed people are all around the place just looking for jobs. They'll do anything."

"Oh Sh**! Hold on guys, I lost a contact. Crap! Nobody move. I lost a contact..."

"Ha! You think you can beat me in this handshake contest. Think again. Your about to give up. You're wincing! You're wincing! Give up? Awww, nooo? Okay we're still going..."
