Northwest Christmas Gift Ideas for Sports Fans

If you're like me and grew up in the Pacific Northwest then you probably root for Northwest sports teams and have since you were very small.

With Christmas approaching very fast (it's only 18 days away) it's time to get a gift for the Northwest fan in your life. Here are five book/DVD suggestions from the sports guys at Just South of North.
  • Pitchers of Beer: The Story of the Seattle Rainiers: Now I have personally read this book and it's great! (I'll get a review up in the near future). The book chronicles how baseball returned to the city of Seattle. It's fast paced and great for any Northwest baseball fan. About the book: In 1937, when local beer baron Emil Sick stepped in, the Seattle Indians were a struggling minor-league baseball team teetering on collapse. Moved to mix baseball and beer by his good friend and fellow brewer, New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert, Sick built a new stadium and turned the team into a civic treasure. The Rainiers (newly named after the beer) set attendance records and won Pacific Coast League titles in 1939, ’40, ’41, ’51, and ’55.

  • Seattle Seahawks 2005 NFC Champions DVD: Ok, I know it's not a book, but it's awesome. Sadly it's not every year that the Seattle Seahawks make it to the Super Bowl. I own this DVD and watch it at least once a year. About the DVD: For nearly three decades the Seattle Seahawks were pro football's most anonymous team, tucked away in the Pacific Northwest, far removed from the media spotlight. But in 2005 the Seahawks could no longer be ignored. They posted the NFC's best record at 13-3 and led the league in scoring, enroute to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. Team stars included league MVP Shaun Alexander, who led the NFL in rushing while punching in a record-shattering 28 touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, fullback Mack Strong, and linemen Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson and Robbie Tobeck were named to the Pro Bowl. On the other side of the ball rookie Lofa Tatupu was one of eight new starters on defense who transformed that unit into one of the league's finest. Here are all the highlights, from opening day right through Super Sunday -- the sights and sounds of every game in this special salute to the greatest season in Seahawks' history.

  • Tales from the Seattle Seahawks Sideline: A Collection of the Greatest Seahawks Stories Ever Told (Tales from the Team): I got this book years ago and loved reading about the untold stories of the NFL team I'd supported for years. About the book: From the hilarious to the surreal, from inside the huddle to inside the broadcast booth, twenty-eight-year Seattle Seahawks veteran Steve Raible takes fans to places they never knew existed. In this newly revised edition of Tales from the Seattle Seahawks Sideline, fans are offered an inside look at life in the locker room and on the sidelines of one of the NFL’s most beloved franchises. Readers will have the chance to laugh along as Jack Patera trades Andre Hines to the Dolphins after warning Don Shula that a worse offensive lineman never existed, to marvel as Raiders legend John Matuszak becomes Seattle’s offensive coordinator during the final minutes of the Seahawks blowout win, to come along with Steve Largent as the Hall of Famer obliterates Broncos safety Mike Harden in the ultimate payback, and so much more. Tales from the Seattle Seahawks Sideline brings all the Seahawks greatest players to life from Jim Zorn, Dave Krieg, Kenny Easley, Curt Warner, Brian Bosworth, Cortez Kennedy, Warren Moon, Mike Holmgren, Ricky Watters, Chad Brown, Shaun Alexander, and more. This insider’s account also explores the lesser known characters whose stories inspire laughter, tears, and lasting lessons. Tales from the Seattle Seahawks Sideline is all about the people, proving through vivid anecdotes why the Seahawks are one of the most storied franchises in today’s NFL.

  • Sonicsgate: Requiem for a Team: While Seattle still doesn't have an NBA team this is an amazing telling of the events that happened to the Seattle Supersonics leaving for Oklahoma City and becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder. About the DVD: Webby and Emmy® Award-winning director Jason Reid pulls no punches in this riveting documentary that explores the modern business of pro sports. SONICSGATE: REQUIEM FOR A TEAM depicts how a perfect storm of corporate greed and political ineptitude drove Seattle's only team with a major league championship to relocate to Oklahoma and become the Thunder in 2008. SuperSonics fans were powerless as the team they supported for 41 years was ripped away, leaving Seattle as the latest casualty of the sports-industrial complex. Featuring exclusive HD interviews with Sonics legends Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, acclaimed author Sherman Alexie and other experts and insiders who witnessed this tragic story unfold.

  • Shipwrecked: A Peoples' History of the Seattle Mariners: A must have for any Seattle Mariners fan. A look at the past and future of the team from Safeco Field. About the book: From "Moneyball," baseball fans have learned about the complicated relationship between money and success. The question now for Seattle Mariner fans is whether the current ownership will spend the money to give fans the team they have dreamed of and earned with years of support.
In "Shipwrecked," Jon Wells, a baseball writer and publisher who has covered the team for more than fifteen years, asserts that poor management and shortsighted ownership kept a team with three first-ballot Hall of Fame players, each in the prime of his career, from reaching the World Series. Wells details every misstep by the Mariners during the team’s 35-year history. But wait, there’s hope! Can General Manager Jack Zduriencik bring in enough young talent to make this club a contender again, as he did for the Milwaukee Brewers?

Christmas gift idea: Shake Weight

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Wow. In all the marketing of this product noone thought, "hey, this just seems like a bad idea." I really can't believe that. But, somehow these commercials got made.

Christmas gift idea: obstacle course

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Everyone thinks that they can do an obstacle course. And it's for that reason that so many gameshows incorporate one into their programing. But the truth is, they just look painful.

Christmas gift idea: Bodyboard

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

You'd think that something as simple as a bodyboard wouldn't need instructions. Apparently it does. WARNING: Make sure you reach water upon jumping toward waves of ocean.

Christmas gift idea: Port-a-Potty

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Port-A-Potty. Or Honeybucket. Or movable toilet. Whatever you call them, you might think that one would be an awesome Christmas gift. I mean who wouldn't love to have to dig catholes outside anymore? The problem arises when other people become jealous of your new found outdoor toilet and they want to sabotage it.

Christmas gift idea: Spiderman costume

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

With great power comes great responsibility. And with a Spiderman suit hilarity is sure to come. Just because you wear the suit doesn't make you the superhero.

Christmas gift idea: A live tree

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

I know what you're thinking. But Casey, a live tree would be a great gift. Help the world stay green. Right? Wrong. Because then the person you gave the tree to feels obligated to plant the tree in their yard. And chances are they might plant it too close to their house. Then they'll decide to remove the tree years later when it's REALLY big. And as the video shows, that's easier said then done.

Christmas gift idea: swing set

Sure swing sets can be fun. Feeling like you're flying. But what if you something goes wrong? Then I'm sure your friends will laugh at you forever. Much like this kid.

Christmas gift idea: Picture book

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

At first I was going to list a picture book as a bad idea for anyone over 8. But then I saw the following infomercial. Now I'm thinking this guy might need one.

Christmas gift idea: Wii tennis racket

wii sports package
It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

The Wii is awesome. I have one. Brandon has one. We like the Wii around here at JustSON. However, I've seen these accessories for the game. You don't need them to play and after watching the following video, I'm never using them.

Christmas gift idea: Icy Roads

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

If you really wanted to ruin someones day, then give them an icy road. Perhaps a road like the one featured in the video.

Christmas gift idea: The Flex-O-Ladder

ladder
It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

When I buy I ladder the last thing that I want in the name is "flex." I want a sturdy ladder that is solid. With no flex. If there is flex then bad things happen. Watch the video. Although the guy just keeps going despite getting a concussion, he's not helping his cause.

Christmas gift idea: Katana Sword

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Swords are a bad idea. Unless you're a trained ninja, which 98% of us are not, then don't play with them. Don't believe me? Just watch the infomercial where the guy is selling them. Nothing good comes of owning a cheap sword.

Christmas gift idea: A puddle

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

The sun comes out and dries up your gift. All you wanted to do was jump around in your puddle but you couldn't even do that before it dried up because an elk was. Sadness.

Gift 12 of the 24 worst gifts ever: A puddle

December 11, 2010

Christmas gift idea: Pet Rhino

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Rhinos are big creatures. They are meant to run around in the fields of Africa. Not snuggle with you on your coach. Plus, as the following video shows, even talking rhinos are kinda' rude.

Gift 11 of the 24 worst gifts ever: A pet rhino

Christmas gift idea: Killer Robot

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Everyone thinks that having a robot would be cool. I used to. But not all robots are going to look like Rosie and do your chores. Some could look like the one in this video. Bad gift idea. Just stick to remote control cars.

Gift 10 of the 24 worst gifts ever: Killer Robot

Christmas gift idea: The Tiddy Bear

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

I seriously did not think they were saying "tiddy" during this commercial. Plus, could you imagine getting this? "Here honey, you always nag me in the car about your seat belt. Put this bear on your tiddy and you'll be fine."

Pervert bear is more like it.

Gift 9 of the 24 worst gifts ever: The Tiddy Bear

Christmas gift idea: Extenze

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

How awkward a Christmas morning would this be. You wake up and run to the tree to see what Santa left you. There is your Uncle Bob opening his present from your Aunt Judy. At first you think it's gum, but then you see the container. And realize that Jimmie Johnson has sold his soul for a dollar, and a larger....

Gift 8 of the 24 worst gifts ever: Extenze

Christmas gift idea: The Gazelle

It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

I wouldn't buy this product just because of this commercial! But then again, if you gave it someone they can always work on their "butt-OH-tocks!"

Gift 7 of the 24 worst gifts ever: The Gazelle

Christmas gift idea: Slender Shaper

slender shaper
It's that time of day! Time for the "24 days of bad Christmas gifts!"

Who needs to go to the gym anymore? Buy one of these silly belts and you'll be able to "watch the fat melt away" as the commercial states. It's like a fat melting magic machine! Just hook it up and bounce around. And guys, good luck if you give this to your ladies. Because you are sure to get slapped.
