Things I missed this weekend that I probably shouldn't have
Luke Walton wins NBA Championship, quiets his critics - And now he's going to have to prove to all the naysayers his true legacy by winning without Adam Morrison on the roster.Shock: BOOM! Goes the dynamite - They win in a squeaker, 88-27 against Stockton last Saturday on the road. I'm sure fans stayed until the very end for that one.
Michael Phelps becomes an author of a kid's book - And in other news, I'm writing a relationship book on how to enjoy a long, stable marriage.
Pittsburgh Pens win the Stanley Cup - And the four hockey fans still left in America rejoice. By the way, it wasn't like Detroit needed to win this series for a sense of civic pride or anything.
Sounders end winless streak, defeat San Jose 2-1 at home - For some reason soccer seems to think that tie games are cool. And in other news, Donovan McNabb is still unaware that soccer is a sport.
National Drag Racing returns to Spokane for the first time in 30 years - The Spokesman-Review praises the spectator turnout of over 10,000, and then promptly runs a photo on their website of empty stands at the racetrack.

Across the Atlantic
We here at Just South of North enjoy not only the traditional sports, but the non traditional ones too. In fact, since I would like to break into the outdoor writing world, we try to keep a constant update of outdoor stories. Well folks, today you are in for a treat. (well hopefully you think so)
For today, I have a great topic to talk about and that is swimming. Yes, while it may be snowing out my window right now (thanks Groundhog. Thank you very much!) Summer is just around the corner. And for many of us summer means swimming in lakes and the ocean.
But how about Jennifer Figge? She took swimming to the next level. Think Michael Phelps is Aquaman? Than Figge is Aquawoman.
On February 5th she stepped onto the beach of Trinidad. She last had touched land on January 12. Why? Because Figge, a 56-year-old from Aspen, Colorado, became the first woman to swim across the Atlantic.
The total distance of her trip has yet to be calculated because she is now off from Trinidad to the Virgin Islands. Once she gets there, in late February, her whole trip will be added up.
Read her story here.
Yeah, this lady can swim across the entire Atlantic, and I get winded swimming across the pool. And that's just a plastic kiddie one in my parent's front yard!

Halloween Costume Ideas!

Halloween is already upon us and I’m sure you’re already sick of seeing the “Zombie, because I think death is cool” and “Kitty Kat, because all I have to do is wear cat ears on my head” variety of costumes.
Luckily, sports provides a myriad of possible costume ideas, and since this column is just a week too late, you have an entire year to make it.
Ed Hochuli
Simply get a referee jersey, pad your shirt to give a bulky, strong-man appearance (apology to “that guy” who thinks he has guns for arms but they’re actually twigs) and then walk around with a whistle, inadvertently blowing it all the time.
Tri-City Americans fan
This requires a mullet wig, Ams jersey, mobile home, cut-off jeans, cowbells (a sure sign of an annoying fan) and no Memorial Cup Championship ring.
WSU or Washington Football fan
Very easy, just find a paper bag and put it over your head.
Clay Bennett
This might require you to go down to your local Halloween store and find a snake costume.
Shaun Alexander
You can just dust off that old “37” Seahawks jersey and fall down everytime it looks like somebody is going to get close to you.
Mariners General Manager
Just walk around in a suit throwing money at people that don’t look very talented when it comes to the game of baseball.
Michael Phelps
This might be a little tough; somehow get your hands on eight Olympic Medals from Beijing, wear them around your neck and make sure that you have ample time to squeeze your large buttocks into one of the swimming suits that are tighter than the Oakland Athletics front office.
Fred McGriff
Wear a baseball cap with an obscenely high crown, and keep endorsing Tom Emanski’s Defensive Drills Video.

Man, sucks to be you
Say what you will about Michael Phelps, and James from Collegiate Handyman has plenty to say:"All the American Announcers want to jump his bone, they don't even talk about the rest of the swimmers. I'd rather just watch the Canadian broadcasts."
Well said, I'll try to talk a bout another swimmer ... Serbia's Milorad Cavic, who was leading Phelps in the 100m butterfly but instead of taking one last stroke, he coasted and tried to stretch out for the victory, which allowed the American swimmer to do one last stroke and push ahead quickly for a .01 margin of victory.
Thank goodness for touchpad sensors.
It's really go to suck to be Cavic right now. He had the race, but a half-second action cost him a gold medal. But really... don't coast to victory, you still had enough room to do a final stroke.
Okay, I have no idea why I'm calling people out on swimming when I couldn't make it across a pool at the local Holiday Inn.
Hey, does anyone know if the Davenport Hotel has a pool?
