I had come to accept that the Seattle SuperSonics were moving to Oklahoma City and have grown emotionally numb to it. Then I watched this video and my hate towards their new ownership has been completely reborn.
The Sonics officially died when Gary Payton left town.
With that, let me just elaborate how much I detest what has happened to modern sport. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, I know, 'it sells,' and yeah yeah, 'the world is buying,' but does anyone else think that something is wrong with a few things?
Modern sport emerged from a combination of the 'Muscular Christianity' movement (evangelical Christians responsible for modern sport, wow!), and a social reform for amateurism, i.e. the first modern Olympic Games. The emphasis was doing your best and learning from both wins and losses. Amateurism was at the fore front. Now we have teams jumping cities, and people like Ben Roethlisberger making 102 million dollars over eight years???
I know that 'it sells,' but I think a few of us have missed the point. Now I have to root for the Portland Trailblazers. What in the world.
