Man gets three years for illegal animal pelt sales

I came across this on Outdoornews.com.

Anchorage, Alaska — A 41-year-old Craig man will serve more than three years in prison for violating the Lacey and the Marine Mammal Protection acts.

Christopher R. Rowland was also fined $5,000 when he was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Anchorage.

Authorities say he was extensively involved in the illegal hunting, killing and export of sea otters, sea lions and harbor seals, and the illegal sale of their pelts.

Officials say the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documented the illegal take of 75 sea otters and the illegal sale of six sea otter pelts and several skulls.

All I can say is wow.

Who could kill those cute little creatures? Look at that picture of the otter. He is adorable.

And this guy was not only killing them, but illegally selling their pelts. But what I don't understand in all of this is why it took the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service so long to do anything. I doubt that he took 75 otters, six otter pelts and several skulls in one night. It seems they waited a while to get this guy.

It's really sad the number of animals that are on the "black market." And what makes it so sad is the people who buy that crap. The rhino horns, the elephant tusks, the otter pelts, the condor feet. It makes me sick that people pay tons of money to have these items.

  1. They waited a while to bust jerk to build a stronger case against him. Just like when the FEDs bust drug dealers they generally wait to bust the dealer until sometime after the 3rd buy.
