So I like watching Seattle Mariners games with my Grandpa. He pretty much watches every single game for the entire season and spends most of the time just making fun of the players and overall having a good time. Really it's what following an MLB team is all about (and if you're not going to compete, making fun of the players is the only thing you can really do)
Well last night things were different. The Seattle Mariners showed that they have decent talent, but they're not in it mentally. Whether it's the mentality of the city itself or the fact that there were no expectations going into the season - the lazy or stupid play by some of the players is bringing down the team as a whole.
Last night's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins was a snapshot of the season. Great starting pitching - King Felix went 7 innings, struck out 7 and only allowed one earned run. And surprisingly, the bullpen didn't blow things with White and Aardsma pitching very well in relief.
Aardsma retired the side in the top of the ninth, setting up a dramatic bottom of the order for the Mariners. If this were the Red Sox - they would have won the game, the momentum was swinging in the favor, you could feel the crowd at Safeco get into that "if anything happens we're going to explode" mode.
Lopez, Balentien and Johnson go up and they all act like they're swinging for the fences. Good god
And I know that a home run will win the game but the Seattle Mariners aren't exactly known for long towering home runs. They're the most anemic offense in freakin' baseball and these three guys get up to the plate and act like they're the New York F-ing Yankees. Needless to say... three up, three down.
(By the way, remember in the beginning of the season when you were playing small ball and winning? Does anyone else in the Mariners organization realize this?)
Lowe comes into the top of the tenth to pitch, and he's regularly hitting 100 MPH on the radar gun, but is giving up some balls into the outfield ... Mauer doubles, they intentionally walk Morneau and then Franklin Guieterrez makes an amazing play to rob Kubel of a home run. Then they pitch out and catch Mauer stealing home.
All things are going well right? I thought they had nabbed some of the momentum and were well on their way getting out of the jam.
Then a fly ball is hit out to Balentien - and it's was very catchable - but the kid takes the wrong route towards the ball (lazily, I might add) and ends up losing it off the tip of his glove. A run scores. It wasn't Lowe that blew the game. It was Balentien.
And that's where my grandpa flies off the handle "He just lost the game. Unbelievable. That guy is ridiculous. You're in the major leagues and you can't catch a fly ball!?!?!"
That's the PG version by the way. And now the Mariners had to make up the run in the bottom of the tenth with my grandpa going into Herm Edwards mode (WE PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!).
Cedeno strikes out swinging. Griffey Jr.'s corpse still thinks he can hit home runs and pops out and then Ichiro strikes out to end the game and end his hitting streak. What a joke.
Here's the thing, great performances by some guys are getting canceled out by terrible or lazy play by other guys. I feel a storm brewing in the clubhouse. Anyways, I fully expect that by the mid-point of the season, my grandpa and I will be watching the WNBA before we tune into the Mariners games again.
