JustSON at the Movies: Twilight

In an effort to see what Casey was talking about, I borrowed Twilight on DVD from a friend and watched it last night after the Spokane Chiefs game.

By the way, last night's 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Giants in the second round of the WHL playoffs was amazing. Not only did the Chiefs even the series up 2-2, but they fended off a ferocious attack at the end of the game to cling onto the one-goal lead. They were down player-wise 5-4 and 5-3 near the end of the game due to penalties and provided fans for one epic hockey game. Wow.

Now enough about WHL Hockey. Let's talk about vampires.

It's actually a decent movie. Not wonderful, but a very watchable movie. Largely because it's based in Forks, Wash. It's great to hear other Washington locals to get mentioned as well like Port Angeles.

And apparently Forks, Wash. paid the makers of this film to make every effort possible to mention Forks in the film. I know several people from Forks and what I hear is that it's like a small logging community like my hometown of Chewelah. Only we don't have a vampire problem.

Anyways, the main characters Bella and Edward are actually pretty believable, while some of the fringe characters are sometimes glossed over or just fit into a stereotype. Oh well, the movie isn't about them.

There are some hammy moments, but this is more than an entertaining movie than something you want film students to critique. However, for the most part it's very watchable and I like the angle they took of exploring more of the character issues than throwing  a bunch of action and neck chomping at us. That being said. The action scenes kind of suck. Too much CGI and it feels a little like a low-budget tv series at sometimes. However, they aren't too distracting since as I said before - the neck chomping vampire action is not the focus of the movie.

I give it a 6/10. The counts include : one cougar (as in old lady that looks for younger guys) mother, one dad that is probably going to be me in 15 years (chief of police in Forks), one supposed auto accident that happen on bare wet pavement, roughly 1,268 references to the rain in Forks and several racial undertones concerning Native Americans

Alright, I'll turn my man card in for watching this movie now.
