High School Sports Feature: Zackery Lystedt Law

A new bill has been signed by Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire. It is called the Zackery Lystedt law and it will prohibit athletes under the age of 18 who are suspected of sustaining a concussion from being able to compete without the approval of a licensed health care provider. With the signing of this bill Washington now has the toughest "return-to-play" law for concussions in all of high school sports nationwide.

The law is named after Zackery Lystedt who had to be hospitalized after a football game he played in back in October of 2006 for Mount Tahoma Junior High. It is believed the injury occurred when Zackery, who was 13 at the time, made a tackle which eventually caused his brain to begin bleeding.
