JustSON Friday Night Lights Edition

We're starting a new Friday feature here at JustSON. We're going to be previewing the big games according to the Tacoma News Tribune. We'll show you their picks for the games, and then we'll give you ours.

Huge high school football game out in Sammamish, Washington tonight. I live just down the road from Skyline and have gone to some games last year. They are impressive. Here's the Tacoma News Tribunes take on the game tonight:

Oaks Christian (Calif.) at No. 1 Skyline, 7 p.m. today
Plenty of star power here – before getting to celebrities in the stands. Some recruiting experts consider Skyline QB Jake Heaps the top prep quarterback in the country. Oaks Christian QB Nick Montana, son of NFL legend Joe Montana, has given an oral commitment to Washington. Some of Montana’s teammates have equally famous fathers in Wayne Gretzky and Will Smith, who are expected to be in attendance. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Oaks Christian is ranked No. 6 in USA Today’s Super 25; Skyline is No. 17.

The TNT Pick: Skyline 24, Oaks Christian 23. Home-field advantage favors Skyline.

The JustSON Pick: Oaks Christian 28, Skyline 21. The stars are in line for Oaks Christian tonight, and it's too much for Heaps. This will be Heaps first loss in high school.

Here's the rest of the GAMES OF THE WEEK from the TNT:

SPSL South
No. 10 Curtis (2-0, 2-0) at Rogers (1-1, 1-1), 7 p.m. today at Sparks Stadium
The News Tribune pick: Curtis 31, Rogers 21

The JustSON pick: Curtis 38, Rogers 21

SPSL North
Kentwood (1-1, 0-1) at Tahoma (2-0, 2-0), 7 p.m. today
The News Tribune pick: Tahoma 26, Kentwood 20

The JustSON pick: Tahoma 30, Kentwood 17- Tahoma is powerful this year, Kentwood isn't as good as years past.

Non-league
No. 4 Orting (2-0) at Meridian (1-1), 7 p.m. today
The News Tribune pick: Orting 38, Meridian 20

The JustSON pick: Orting 45, Meridian 13 - Orting has a highpower offense this year. They're good.

Non-league
2A No. 7 Sequim (2-0) at 1A No. 7 Cascade Christian (2-0), 7 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium
The News Tribune pick: Sequim 27, Cascade Christian 19

The JustSON pick:
Sequim 35, Cascade Christian 31 - A close one, but Sequim pulls it off.

Check back tomorrow and we'll give you the results of the games and how we match up against the TNT.

Also, a little shoutout to my alma mater, White River High School.

Unlikely Titantic Second-ranked Lakes travels to White River for an unlikely meeting of undefeated SPSL 3A teams tonight. The Lancers (2-0, 2-0) are sitting atop the standings, and the surprising Hornets (2-0, 2-0) are right there with them. After going 1-9 last season, White River has outscored Franklin Pierce and Sumner by a total of 65-28.

The JustSON pick: Sadly, I see Lakes winning in a blowout.

High School Sports Feature: Issaquah boys soccer

The Issaquah High School boys soccer team had never been to the post-season in the history of the program. Yesterday, that changed.

Issaquah qualified for the 16-team state tournament with a 2-1 win over Evergreen of Vancouver on Saturday.

Yesterday they hosted Rogers of Puyallup in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

And they walked away with a 2-1 victory.

After 49 minutes of play, the score was still locked at zero. Issaquah midfielder Lucas Morias put the Eagles up first when he put in a penalty kick.

10 minutes later at the 59 mark, Conner Holmes headed in a goal to put the Eagles up 2-0.

But Rogers fought back. Just four minutes later, Rodgers got on the board with a penalty pass from Josh Carbudillo to Stephen Dutson.

The first trip to state for the team, and they walk away with a win.

According to the Sammamish Reporter:

Issaquah (13-5-2) will face Marysville-Pilchuck (17-0-2) at 1 p.m., Saturday at Lake Stevens High School in a quarterfinal matchup. The winner advances to the semifinals to face the winner of Snohomish-South Kitsap, Friday May 29 at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

High School Sports Feature: Division I Lacrosse Championship

Saturday May 16th at 2:00 pm pacific time the Lakeside Lions will be looking to add a 4th consecutive Girls Division I state championship to their total. The match will take place at Eastide Catholic School in Sammamish. This will be the 17th annual Washington Lacrosse Girls State Championship and the Lions have won 6 of them. On Saturday they will be facing Bainbridge High School in what is a rematch of last years title game which the Lions won 9-8.
The Spartans of Bainbridge will certainly not be a pushover as they are coming off of delivering a beat down to Mercer Island on Wednesday 23-5. Bainbridge owns 7 state championships of their own in girls lacrosse so they are not in uncharted waters against Lakeside. In the other semi-final match up Lakeside took care of Roosevelt 14-10 to force the rematch.

In other Lacrosse news, today the Division I All-State girls Lacrosse teams were announced. Roosevelt High School was very well represented as junior midfielder Angie Anderson along with senior Attackers Madeline Grose and Olivia Hull were named to the First Team. On the Second Team sophomore Sarah Clevenger made the team on defense and senior Alison Crabb made the team as an Attacker. Also head coach Vinca Swanson was named the Coach of the Year. You can see the rest of the list here.

High School Sports Feature: 3A SPSL/WCC Sub District Track Meet

Yesterday was the first half of the 3A South Puget Sound League and Western Cascade Conference Sub District meet.
I wasn't able to make it out for it, but the match proved to have a number of high lights. Thanks to athletic.net for keeping us up-to-date on the results.

The finals in field events for boys were: Discus, pole vault and long jump.

Let's start with the pole vault. It was no surprise that Gabe Cadero-Smith of Yelm High School walked away with the gold in the event. He had lead among all the participants in the league all season. At the meet he jumped 13 feet 6 inches for the win.

White River's Austin Shirey, who I featured last week, finished in a three way tie for third at 12 feet even. The top seven performers in each event will move on to districts next weekend at Mount Tahoma High School.

In the long jump the victory went to Spencer Marr. Marr, of Clover Park High School, dominated the performance with a distance of 21 feet 2 1/4 inches. Second place was Quentin Sison from Timberline High School with a jump of 20 feet 7 3/4 inches.

Over at the discus Darrien Creamer won with a throw of 155 feet 11 inches. The junior from Peninsula High School has the fourth best throw in the state this year at 168 feet 5 inches. However, two of the throwers in front of him are also in 3A.

The only final from the running events was the 1600 meter. Marcus Dickson of White River won the event in 4:26. Dickson is only a freshman.

The rest of the events will be decided this afternoon.

On the girls side the following field events were final: high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put.

Over at the shot put pit Tiara Killmer of Bonney Lake won by almost three feet with her throw of 39 feet 11 inches. Second place was Christi Ometu of Auburn Mountainview with a throw of 37 feet 1/4 inch.

The javlin was won by Sasha Weber of Timberline. Weber let loose a throw of 114 feet 7 inches. Weber is also only a freshman.

Weber also took away the gold in the high jump. She won at 5 foot 6 inches which was 6 inches higher than second place.

In the long jump Stephanie Schreiner from Enumclaw High School won with a jump of 17 feet 1 3/4 inch. Second was Briana Welsh of Timberline at 16 feet 1 inch.

On the track Ashley Taylor of Yelm High School won the 3200 meters by 11 seconds with the time of 11:31. Second was Theresa Edwards of Bonney Lake in 11:42.

Today are the finals in the rest of the events and it will be decided who moves on to Districts.

High School Sports Feature: Zackery Lystedt Law

A new bill has been signed by Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire. It is called the Zackery Lystedt law and it will prohibit athletes under the age of 18 who are suspected of sustaining a concussion from being able to compete without the approval of a licensed health care provider. With the signing of this bill Washington now has the toughest "return-to-play" law for concussions in all of high school sports nationwide.

The law is named after Zackery Lystedt who had to be hospitalized after a football game he played in back in October of 2006 for Mount Tahoma Junior High. It is believed the injury occurred when Zackery, who was 13 at the time, made a tackle which eventually caused his brain to begin bleeding.

Check out the specifics of the House Bill Report here.

High School Sports Feature: Snohomish to State

Snohomish High School punched their ticket to the boys 4A state baseball tournament on Tuesday after they beat Kamiak 2-0 in the semifinals of the Northwest District 4A tournament. Pitching the shutout for the Panthers was Braden Allen who is the number 2 starter on the team. Allen allowed only 2 hits while striking out 6. In both games that Snohomish has played in this tournament they have yet to allow a single run.

Max Foxter provided all the offense Allen and the Panthers would need when he hit a double in the sixth inning, then scored on a two-out single.

On Saturday Snohomish will face Marysville-Pilchuk in the district title game where they hope to fair better than the previous two meetings against the Tomahawks this year. Both of the those contests resulted in a loss for Snohomish. The winner of the title game gets to play at Everett Memorial Stadium and the loser gets to travel down to Tacoma.

High School Sports Feature: Evergreen 2A golf

Yesterday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma, Washington a clash of titans happened. The undefeated Aberdeen High School Bobcats met the undefeated Elma High School Eagles in a battle for supremacy. The winner would be crowned the girls Evergreen 2A Conference golf champion, and the looser would settle for second place.

Elma star
freshman Alexis Keating shot a one under par to finish at 35 on the course and an easy gold finish.

But after her, things got rocky for the Eagles as they would eventually loose
256-239.

The way scoring works in team golf is all the players scores are added up for the total. And the lower score wins.

Aberdeen was led by
Karley Wagner who shot a 43 and Taylor Sundstrom with a 44.

No
w that the crown has been decided, the teams headed out for non-league matches today. Elma played Montesano at Oaksridge Golf Course and Aberdeen met Rochester at Centralia’s Riverside Golf Course.

High School Sports Feature: White River Track and Field

For today's JustSON High School Sports feature I headed out to Buckley, Washington to my old high school. White River High School.

Now when I was in high school I was good in the classroom but my main love was track (actually field) because you see, I was a pole vaulter.

For those of you who have never pole vaulted, I'm sorry. It is a thrill like no other but it takes a certain type of person who can compete at this sport. You have to be driven. Even after breaking my elbow pole vaulting my freshman year I was still drawn back to the sport. After a year of rehab, I made it back for my junior and senior years.

Well today, I was in for a treat as White River took on Enumclaw and Auburn Mountainview in a three team meet.

Naturally I spent the meet over at the pole vault pits. My former coach is still the pole vault coach there so it was great to see him.

But before I get to the battle that took place at the pits, I must congratulate the White River Hornets boys track team on their perfect season. They finished 8-0 on the year and hands down won the South Puget Sound 3A crown.

I found this amazing, back when I was in school (I graduated in '03) the team would win one track meet a year. And that was against Fife High School every year.

But this team had some amazing things happening they beat Enumclaw 82-62 and Auburn Mountainview 91-54. I cover more of the rest of the teams highlights in a bit. But first, back to pole vaulting.

There were 12 vaulters to start the meet (four from each school). And even as the bar rose to 10 feet, there were still 11 in the competition. At 12 feet there were just two. Austin Shirey of White River and Clifford Newman of Enumclaw.

At this point the rest of the track meet had ended and soon most of the participants in the meet were lining the runway of the pole vault pit to watch the battle for first. It was a great site to see.

Newman cleared 12'6" on his second attempt. (You get three attempts at each height). His coach had said that his previous personal record (PR) was 11'6".

Shirey missed his second attempt at 12'6" and was down to his last chance. His previous PR was 12'.

As he walked back down the runway for his third and final try at 12'6", the White River team was cheering for him and hollering their support. With that, Shirey stared down the runway, picked up his pole and cleared the height.

Newman went on to win the event at 13 feet, but Shirey earned himself a PR at the meet today. Also, keep in mind Shirey is only a sophomore.

Here are some of the photos I snapped at the meet today. Click on each photo to make them larger:

Austin Shirey clears 12 feet as storm clouds move into the area.

Clifford Newman runs to attempt 12 feet 6 inches as fans watch.

Aaron Toman races down the runway on his first attempt at 10 feet.

All in all it was a great day for pole vaulting. And while the pole vault was my highlight at the meet, there were a number of athletes that deserve recognition on both the boys and the girls side.

Another great battle took place on the track in the 300 meter hurdles. Abe Kellogg of Enumclaw won in 39.61 and Kramer Green of White River finished right on his heels in 39.78. It was a fight down to the final step. Kellogg got the extra edge on the final hurdle and it was just enough to hold off Green. Only 22 runners in all of Washington state have ran under 40 seconds in the 300 hurdles this year.

Green actually ranks with the 9th fastest time in the state with his time of 39.49 that he ran at the Shelton Invitational on May 2nd. It is also the 3rd fastest time in all of 3A.

First place finishers on the league champion Hornet boys included Collin Green in the 400m at 50.50. The 1600m relay tean won in 3:25.32. Blake Tidwell won the long jump with at jump of 19'10.5". Grant Peckham won the discus with a throw of 140'0". And Blake Halvorson won the high jump at 5'6".

On the girls side, White River beat Auburn Mountainview 74-47 but lost to Enumclaw 57-66. They finish at 5-3 on the season which should be good enough for third place in the league.

First place finishers for the girls were Lauryn Wate in the 1600m at 5:21.2 and in the 800m in 2:24.7. The 800m relay team won in 1:49.12 and the 1600m relay won in 4:15.79. Ashley Llapitan won the 3200m in 12:24. Hailey Menzel won the pole vault at 8'6".

Next up for the White River track teams is sub-districts. The teams head down the hill to Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner on May 14 and 16. After that is the district meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma on May 22-23. The state meet will be on May 29-30, also at Mount Tahoma.

High School Sports Feature: Lakesides New Coach

Jason Jones has been hired to coach girls basketball at Lakeside School (Lakeside High School). Jones will be taking over for the retired Sandy Schneider who coached the Lions for 26 seasons. In all those years Schneider collected 473 wins, 5 state championships and a state record 56 game winning streak. Schneider called it a career after leading the Lions to a 4th place finish in the state tournament this season.

In Jones Lakeside gets a coach who has plenty of experience and who is married to a Lakeside alum who played for Sandy Schneider.

Jones began coaching in 1994 at his alma-mater Garfield as an assistant boys basketball coach. He eventually moved on to be the head coach of Hazen's girls team for two years, then to Cleveland High School as Interim Athletic Director and most recently to Tyee.

Currently Jones is the executive director and director of player development for Northwest Elite Basketball.

If anything Jones has certainly been immersed in the Seattle basketball scene for many years. I'm sure Lakeside is eager for him to stick around.

High School decathlete

I came across this story about a high schooler who is the national high school record holder in the decathlon.

His name is Curtis Beach and he attends Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico.

Dick Patrick at USA Today wrote a great article on him.

You can view the article HERE.

High School Sports Feature: Renton baseball

Renton High School had only seen the win column one time before their game on Monday against Evergreen High School.

The Indians got their second win of the season with a score of 6-1.

Just last week Evergreen had beat them 13-10.

But the Indians showed, that just because they are 2-14 overall and 2-14 in league play.

Earning the win for Renton was Oliver Billon. Billon pitched five innings. During that time he gave up two hits and one walk. He also struck out eight batters.

In relief was Adrian Scott. Scott had a good day on the offensive side too. He scored two runs and hit a double.
