Washington Women post impressive comeback win

I don't think I am breaking into any new ground when I say that a 22-point lead in womens basketball is usually pretty concrete. Unless of course you're playing the Washington Huskies. During the Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday, UW rallied past Oregon in a historic win.

A normal player looks at a 22-point deficit and doubt creeps in, wondering if the game can be won. But Washington point guard Jazmine Davis isn't a normal player.

Teammate Kristi Kingma continued to tell her team they were OK despite last-placed Oregon shooting three-pointers to build an early lead in their Pac-12 women's basketball tournament opener on Thursday.

Davis believed her, taking over the second half to help UW win 69-62.

Fifth-seeded Washington (20-10) advanced to play No. 19 Colorado on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at KeyArena. The Huskies lost to the Buffaloes 68-61 in Boulder earlier this season.

Now Oregon was really terrible this year, and Colorado should be really good, but hey, a win is a win right?

The Sark will be back

UW signed head football coach Steve Sarkisian through 2015 with a brand new contract, meaning that the Huskies should at least be competitive through then. Remember when he got here? Boy those Dawgs were terrible. Now the Cougars are the ones that are the laughing stocks of the Pac-10 conference.

Sarkisian, 36, receives an additional two seasons from his first deal. Sarkisian’s guaranteed compensation will be $2 million to $2.25 million this year, to $2.4 million for 2012 and to $2,550,000 in 2013. The additional years will pay Sarkisian a guaranteed $2.7 million in ’14 and $2.85 million in ’15.

Meanwhile Coach Wulff  at WSU will receive a six-pack of Busch-Lite and a circus of midgets for his contract extension through next week.

I tip my cap to you Husky fans for not rooting for Oregon in the National Championship game

I've been known to rail on UW fans quite a bit on this blog, however after the Huskies beat the insufferable Nebraska Huskers this season, I had to give them a tip of the cap.

I also have to give Husky fans for doing the right thing as sports fans: Rooting against Oregon. Sure winning the national championship would be a nice feather in the cap for the Pac-10, but Husky fans are bitter, bitter rivals with the Ducks.

While I personally think it's crap when Husky fans say "Oh we're actually a bigger rival with Oregon" because it IS a load of crap. The Apple Cup will always carry more weight than UW-Oregon. However, Husky fans are doing the right thing by saying "Go Auburn" instead of "Go Pac-10."

I've always thought the SEC is a steaming pile of football vanity, mainly because SEC fans root for each other in bowl games so they can be the best football conference. Um... why? I thought the SEC had the best rivalries and football mattered most to them. If that were true... they wouldn't be rooting for their "bitter rivals?"

Fans that root for "their conference" have no real understanding on how stupid that sounds. "I'm going to root for the team that beat my team out for a spot in this game."

You don't see Red Sox fans rooting for the Yankees.

So Husky fans, congrats, you're not completely hopeless.

UW to "blackout" Husky Stadium

On Thursday, November 18, the University of Washington football team will "blackout" Husky Stadium in their nationally televised game against UCLA.

And Just South of North will be there.

The team will be debuting black jerseys and black pants for the game. The photo to the right is an idea of what the Nike designed jerseys might look like.

Also, reports have it that the endzones will also be painted black.

And fans are invited to join in on the "blackout."

Game starts at 5 p.m. Look for me in the stands. I'll be wearing black.

University of Washington softball

Tonight the Dawgs take on Georgia in the first round of the College Softball World Series.

Three Huskies, Danielle Lawrie, Jenn Salling and Niki Williams made the NFCA All-America teamfirst team.

The UW Daily ran this preview by Christian Capel about the World Series yesterday:

WASHINGTON (50-7)

It’s pretty simple for the Huskies: If Danielle Lawrie pitches like she has all season, they’re the runaway favorite to win another national championship. And this is where Washington’s offense really came alive in 2009’s postseason run, when Jenn Salling and Niki Williams started knocking the ball all over the yard and the Huskies put up runs at a record pace. Plus, UW is in the weaker half of the bracket, facing a familiar Georgia team in the first round, then playing the winner (assuming the Huskies win) of a game between No. 15 Tennessee and No. 10 Arizona. And the Huskies are 7-1 this year against WCWS teams, the only loss coming in their Pac-10 opener against UCLA.

FLORIDA (48-8)

There wasn’t much of a drop-off for the Gators this year after All-American ace Stacie Nelson graduated. Stephanie Brombacher has stepped quite nicely into the void Nelson left, leading Florida with a 34-6 record and 1.89 ERA. The Gators hit the ball so well, though, all she has to do is be mildly effective. Florida has four players with 15 or more homers, led by the 20 of Francesca Enea. Seven of the nine players in their regular starting lineup are batting over .300. That kind of production can make the difference in Oklahoma City.

Locker number 1?

Ok, so a bit early, but NBC Sports has released their 2010 NFL mock draft.

And at number one, going to the Cleveland Browns, is University of Washington's own, Jake Locker.

Here's their reasoning:

A 10th-round pick in the 2009 MLB entry draft, Locker is a multi-talented athlete whose focus is on the gridiron. He can make all the throws, pick up positive yards on the run, and has stayed effective on bad Huskies teams. The Browns are desperate for a franchise quarterback after giving up on Brady Quinn and watching Derek Anderson perform poorly two years running.

Now that's all fine and dandy except that are they forgetting every year before this? Locker has been a terrible passer until this season. One good year doesn't justify a number one overall pick to me. But what do I know. I just work for a blog.

Plus, I hope he comes back cause he'll give the Huskies the best change of going to a bowl game next year.

The University of Washington Huskies softball team is the 2009 NCAA Champions!

Great job ladies!

The trophy is coming to Seattle!

The Huskies ended the Florida Gators season with a 3-2 victory moments ago.

The game ended very fitting as Danielle Lawrie struck out the final batter to win the game.

Lawrie was the 2009 college softball player of the year. And tonight she showed why.

Lawrie finishes the World Series with a 5-1 record, 49 strike outs and a grand slam.

Almost forgot

Husky fans.... your team sucks!

Thanks Leaf. For making WSU look bad

As the draft quickly approaches, I kinda feel sorry for Ryan Leaf. He is made an example of how a first round draft can flop. Not just flop, but crash and burn like a flying pile of manure. And then I don't feel so bad for him when I remember he constantly makes Washington State University famous. As a flop. Hehe.

For those that don't know my loyalties lie across the mountains with the Washington Huskies. And thanks to Leaf, the Cougars are remembered.

But as spring football comes to an end across the nation, I can only hope that both of these schools fare batter than last year. Cause for far too long UW and WSU have lived in the cellar of the PAC-10. And even making teams like Stanford look good. Stanford, yeah, the smart doctors who aren't very good at contact sports. And here is why.

Well, hopefully come December, UW and WSU fans won't end the season with, "Well, there is always next year."
