I saw this commercial and laughed. Next time I go into the wild I'll make sure I add Wheat Thins crunch stix to my 10 essentials. Well, maybe not.

Eastern Washington University football uniforms
This season it appears that the Eastern Washington University football program is taking a page out of the Oregon Ducks playbook.
Five games, five different uniform combination.
The Eagles have yet to wear the same uniform in any of their games yet. Except for their trademark red helmets there have been no continuity.
Here's a look at what the team has taken the field in:
At Nevada: White jerseys and red pants.
In Seattle vs. Central Washington: Black jerseys and black pants.
Vs. Montana on the red turf: Red jerseys and red pants.
At Montana State: White jerseys and white pants.
At Weber State: White jerseys and black pants. (as pictured above)
Now the real question is that this will be the second game on the red turf of Roos Field and will the Eagles wear their all red uniforms again?
I sure hope so because it only makes sense. Red on red.
Tik Tok Friday
It's Friday. Hope everyone has great one. Perhaps you'll spend it the same way Brandon has. Apparently when the bad weather hits Montana there is a lack of things to do. Check it out:
NBA Jam Wii
Perhaps the greatest arcade basketball game of all time was NBA Jam. Any fan will never forget the calls in the game. Such calls as, "he's on fire!"
On Tuesday the game is back! Out on the Wii console.
Also if you ever played the game then you know the sweet unlockable characters that were in the game. Well the masterminds at EA Sports put those unlockables back in plus more.
Back are characters like Bill and Hilary Clinton. But so are new characters like Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, random mascots of the teams, Colin Cowherd, Detlef Schrempf, Scottie Pippen, the Beastie Boys team and many, many more.

Eight-man college football?
I've heard this brought up a few times and the more I hear about it, the more it makes sense. Eight and six-man football is something that's fairly common in the state of Montana. It allows smaller schools to still be competitive and field teams with a small pool of kids to choose from. The weirdest thing about covering high school football in Montana has been the number of kids on the sidelines and at practice...
Not that many.
I remember high school football in Chewelah and it seemed like we had at least two teams worth of kids standing and watching the offense and defense go through it's plays (You can tell I played a lot if I'm the one counting kids standing around watching practice). In Montana, it seems like everyone is involved and everyone is active.
After a few people brought this up and after it kicked around in my head for a while, I wondered why they don't do eight or six-man college football?
Why? So other sports don't get dinged for the massive size of a normal football program. In a small school like Eastern Washington University, it seems like there's still between sixty and eighty kids roaming around on the football practice fields. That's hard to make up in Title 9 for female sports. There just isn't another female sport that they can make those numbers with.
It's not like EWU football is a massive money-making machine either. Most schools lose money or break even with their athletics and in this economy, that's a huge drain.
Now if they switched to eight-man football, they could cut down the number of kids on the team to perhaps 25 or 30. Can you imagine how much cheaper that is? And we wouldn't have to cut sports like baseball and wrestling.
Some football purists might go crazy, but seriously, if a school like Western Washington University has to cut their football program entirely because of cost, wouldn't you rather have fewer players than no football at all.
Watching eight man football is a hoot. Frankly, there's not a huge difference except it's a much more open... and exciting brand of football.

Gerber Bear Grylls knife
Earlier this year I told you that Gerber and Bear Grylls were teaming up to make "the ultimate knife."
That knife is now available and Bear is promoting it. The thing does look very sweet. Check it out:

University of Hawaii joins PAC 10
Ok, ok. So maybe the title of this post hasn't exactly happened yet but hear me out.
I recently got NCAA Football 2011 and started a dynasty with the Hawaii Warriors.
In my first season I finished second in the WAC with a loss in the New Mexico Bowl. In my second season I won the WAC and finished the season with a victory in the Emerald Bowl.
But the big news came at the end of that season.
A neat feature in the game is that at the end of the season you get offers from other schools to come coach for them. But at the end of the second season Hawaii got an offer to leave the WAC for the PAC 10 because the PAC 10 wanted rid of WSU.
No joke.
So of course I took the offer and moved Hawaii to the PAC 10. And WSU consequently got put in the WAC.
Now here's why that would make sense in the real world. WSU is terrible but during the third season they are currently leading the WAC with a 5-3 record.
In the PAC 10 they are hard fought to even put points on the board, but in the WAC they'd stand a chance. And it's not like they dominate in other sports either, so as a whole it'd benefit the athletic department.
As for Hawaii they'd put up much more of a fight than WSU has in football. Sure both lost to USC but Hawaii was in it for the whole game until a few mistakes cost them the win and they lost 49-36.
However USC crushed WSU 50-16.
So Hawaii lost by 13 and WSU lost by 34.
And that's not just for football. In volleyball Hawaii is currently 14-1 and ranked number 5 in the nation. Which is ahead of all but one PAC 10 school with Stanford being number 1.
Where's WSU? Well they currently are 6-8 and sitting in a nice 9th place in the PAC 10.
This move would only make sense. I say that the PAC 10 take a vote and kick Pullman into the WAC. Or worse yet, but possible more appropriately, Division 2 and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Oh wait. But then Central Washington would beat them all the time.

Seattle Sounders FC win U.S. Open Cup
For the second time in two years the Seattle Sounders have won the U.S. Open Cup. This time with a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew. That's two years in the MLS and two trophies!
And to top it off the attendance at the match tonight was 31,311 fans. Which is a new U.S. Open Cup Final record!

Seahawks sign Lynch
The carousel, sorry, "Carrol"-sel of players on the roster of the Seattle Seahawks continued today as the team signed Marshawn Lynch from the Buffalo Bills. In exchange the Hawks gave the Bills a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft and a conditional late-round pick in 2012.
To make room for Lynch the Hawks cut Julius Jones.
I personally like this move. Jones hasn't done anything since his arrival here. And sure Lynch has some baggage (trouble with the law) but what better place for a new start than Seattle?
And one thing is for sure, after the 20-3 beating at the hands of the Rams on Sunday the Hawks could sure use a forceful runner in the backfield.
Since entering the league in 2007, Lynch has 2,765 career rushing yards with 17 TDs on the ground. Lynch's numbers have steadily declined after a breakout rookie year in 2007, when he rushed for 1,115 yards.
Lynch will now be in the backfield with Justin Forsett and Leon Washington.
Forsett and Lynch were teammates at Cal.

What the heck happened in football this weekend?
Okay better get this out of the way before Casey writes a 1,000 word column about it. Congrats Husky fans, you beat USC again. Remember when you did it last year and still didn't make a bowl game? But I'm sure you're still singing the praises of this guy...
Jake Locker, who's most assured to be a first-round bust in the NFL led a heroic drive to get his team into field goal range. Hooray! He's still going to suck in the pros, but at least he's having a better weekend than the WSU Cougars who actually showed fight but still lost to the UCLA Bruins. I can hear the Dean's office warming up Paul Wulff's pink slip right now.
Boise State put a 70-point beatdown on New Mexico State but still got leap-frogged by Oregon in the polls. What does that mean? (a) New Mexico State sucks so bad that a 70-point blowout is considering an off performance by the Broncos and (b) by actually having college teams on their schedule, Oregon is showing why they deserve to be in the national title talk. Oh, and the Pac-10 is really good, sans Washington State.
Should we move into real football? FCS I mean.
The Montana Grizzlies put a smackdown on Northern Colorado 30-7, while Montana State barely won in a track meet with Sacramento State. It was 64-61 in Sacramento and it took overtime to do it. What does that mean? I still think MSU is the better team in the Big Sky Conference and will beat the Griz in their annual rivalry game.
But don't count out the Eags who defeated Weber State 35-24 as EWU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell had a rare good game. Congrats and I hope he refrains from doing his normal Rex Grossman impression from here on out. Perhaps he could even play for the Seattle Seahawks as Matt Hasselbeck is not really being the spoon that stirs the kettle. The Hawks lost to the woeful Rams 20-3. All I can say is what the hell?
That wasn't even the worst loss of the day, as Casey's wife Lindsey is a huge Broncos fan.
That's a photo of Casey and Lindsey. Lindsey is on the right. Anyways, the loathsome Broncos won in dramatic fashion 26-20 over my beloved Tennessee Titans. Whatever. It's early in the season and Denver will go 8-8 and miss the playoffs.

Casey was at this game and kept texting me updates as I covered some Polson Pirates soccer. You could say that we both got our dose of soccer today, except Casey got his with 30,000 more fans and probably got to yell at the refs.

Advantage - Pirates, is Keller an Eagle Scout? I think not. Frissell is and he kept Polson in the game during the first half of a 2-1 win over Whitefish today.

Sounders - Rave Green. All the fans are wearing them, except for the dumb fans wearing the highlighter jerseys.
Pirates - I'm going to email the coach and see how much I can purchase a jersey for. Preferably not game worn because there's no way I'm fitting in a jersey that a high schooler wears and that's also kind of creepy.
Advantage - Sounders, they also have scaves.
Stadium
Sounders - Qwest Field, a state-of-the-art football mecca that's also good to host soccer.
Pirates - The Polson Sports Complex that also serves the football team. It has a wonderful view of Flathead Lake.
Advantage - Sounders, Polson doesn't quite have the "PEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAANUUUUUTTTTS" guy.
Soccer Saturday from Polson
I watched some good soccer today between Polson and Whitefish. The boys won 2-1 over the Bulldogs and secured themselves at least a No. 2 seed from the NW A conference in the playoffs. The girls lost 4-0 but rested themselves up and were playing around with their lineup to get ready for two key matchups against Bigfork and Libby next week.

You readers of Just South of North might think I'm joking when I say that Brandon is afraid of bears. Well he was at the movies last night and this trailer came on. He left the theater weeping and didn't come back. He was later found in the backseat of his car hiding under blankets.
