This Saturday in College Football

It's looking like it's going to be Florida and Oklahoma in the national championship game if all predictions and BCS scenarios play out, which is sure to cause an uproar from every single team with one loss in the country.

Well boo hoo.

Right now, at this moment, the no. 1 and no. 2 teams in the country are Florida and Oklahoma. There's really no doubt about that, except for Texas fans, who will say that they defeated the Oklahoma Sooners earlier this year. Well good job, get a good drink of water and enjoy the Sun Bowl because nowadays it's all about what you're doing right now.

Texas beat the Sooners, were in the driver's seat to the national championship and then lost to Texas Tech, who were then in that same seat, until they got absolutely annihilated by Oklahoma. They get the tiebreaker to the Big 12 Championship game because of their BCS standings and they annihilated Missouri, which was the 19th-ranked team in the country.

Sorry Longhorn fans, your team had it's shot and screwed it up, Oklahoma meanwhile has been simply unstoppable these past few weeks and oh...

THEY WON THEIR CONFERENCE

It would be ridiculous for the Longhorns to be in the National Championship game when they haven't even won their division within their conference.

Does Texas deserve a shot? Sure. However our current system only sets up the no. 1 and no. 2 teams in the country, which is Oklahoma and Florida by most accounts. You can't blame the BCS for the fact that their are competitive no. 3, no. 4 and no. 5 teams as well - however you don't see these coaches talking to their university presidents or conferences about this. You don't.

The BCS gives us the two top teams, as advertised. Every team knows this going into the season.

And please Boise State and Utah... stop complaining about getting snuffed because some FCS programs have a tougher schedule than you do.

Without further delay here's this week's scores:

No. 12 Ball State 24, Buffalo 42 - I'm not shocked that Ball State finally lost a game, I am shocked though that Buffalo is 8-5.

No. 23 Pittsburgh 34, UCONN 10 - Congrats Pittsburgh, enjoy the Sun Bowl.

No. 18 Boston College 12, Virginia Tech 30 - That was the ACC Championship game... yep, that conference is having a down year.

No. 1 Alabama 20, No. 2 Florida 31 - Look! A real conference championship game!

No. 5 USC 28, UCLA 7 - What's funny is that the Trojans seem to play in the Rose Bowl more often than the Bruins... ooo burn.

No. 19 Missouri 21, No. 4 Oklahoma 62 - Yeah Oklahoma doesn't deserve to be in the National Championship Game... no way.

No. 13 Cincinnati 29, Hawaii 24 - And will this loss, the Warriors will be playing in their home state, in their home stadium, for a bowl game. Look for them to get blownout in that game against the 7th best Pac Ten team.

Our thoughts on college football in Week One...

-East Carolina University is the Pirates. And they did a mighty job of raiding and pillaging the win from Virgina Tech. Yarg!

- The game was played in Charlotte, N.C. at the Carolina Panthers' Bank of America Stadium. Despite the fact that it was supposed to be something of a "home game" for the Pirates (Carolina is in their school name for heaven's sake), the place was packed with Virginia Tech fans. Then after some research, Charlotte is actually closer to Blacksburg where VT is located (160 miles) compared to ECU's Greenville home address (which was 250 miles away). Go figure.

- With every 10 hard hits that Jake Locker takes, he loses a year of his life. In the loss to Oregon he lost 12 years.

- There's only one thing more inaccurate than Miss Cleo's tarot card readings... Jake Locker's passes.

- Paul Wulff has left Cheney, and in doing so seemed to have added a few pounds. But maybe it was just that the cameras add 57 pounds.

- or maybe it's the fact that several players for the Cougars have either been arrested or suffered season-ending injuries. That or he can actually eat now on the salary that WSU gives him.

- Also, if you watched the game, how many times did they cut to Wulff pacing back and forth on the sidelines at Quest with a perturbed look on his face?

- Michigan is terrible, no matter who is the coach.

- And what's really sad is that Utah beating the Wolverines is not an upset.

- Penn State however crushed their opponent, with the same coach they've had for the past 100 years.

- And speaking of old coaches, did anyone catch Dr. Lou during ESPN gameday? We'll be tuning into that on a weekly basis.

- Eastern Washington University put up 24 points on Texas Tech, which was more points than Washington State University and the University of Washington put up together.

- And yet WSU and UW refuse to play the Eagles in a playdown game.

- LSU is better than Michigan. But it took blowing App. State out of the water to prove that. Wait, no didn't. Michigan is terrible.

- There is talk of making the Big Ten a FCS conference.

- Chattanooga put up 2 whole points on Oklahoma, and allowed 52 points. Washington plays Oklahoma in two weeks. This is not going to be pretty. Final score: Oklahoma 112, Washington -4.

- That's going to be off of one field goal and an extra point.

- Cal Poly has a football team. Yeah, I was surprised too. And somehow that football team beat San Diego State 29-27.

- And Brandon's new-found FBS team, the Idaho Vandals, had a less than stellar start against the Arizona Wildcats. Okay, that was an understatement -- the Vandals lost 70-0. Wow.

Something you should know about Northwest sports fans...

The NFL is just now getting a taste of the pent-up frustration that Northwest sports fans have been experiencing for years. It's not easy being up here in a far-off corner of the country, basically written off by everyone as part of Canada. You'll hear this often on ESPN...

"(Generally overrated running back who's name rhymes with John Halemzander) doesn't get as much media attention because he's tucked up in the great unknown Northwest, a place that we're pretty sure doesn't have electricity yet. Must be tough for John."

However, if you East Coast pundits, Southern California Yuppies, Midwest Sodbusters and Southern loons should understand is that we're just as passionate and excited about our sports scene as you guys. Consider the following...

1. When you go to a Apple Cup, chances are you're either going to say F*** the Cougs or F*** the Huskies. Why? Because both respective fan sections chant this. At the same time.

2. We still think Warren Moon is a God, and that John Kitna was probably a mistake by God.

3. 116 wins, no World Series. We still wake up in the middle of the night because of this one.

4. If the Super Sonics move to Oklahoma City, Portland will experience a strange surge in the grunge music movement.

...and for the first time in the city's history, it wont be known as Seattle Jr.

5. We hate Kobe.

6. And Jeter.

7. There's this general sense of resentment towards A-rod because he punked out for a bigger contract, but a love towards Ken Griffey Jr. because he punked out of Seattle but ended up experiencing a injury curse of biblical proportions. Seriously, read Job 4:15 "And thalt talented Griffey pinched hiseth testicallas in his jock strappeth."

8. You'll never see so much flannel at a sporting event then in the Northwest.

9. Never stop in Spokane, Wash. with a Portland Pilots T-shirt on.

10. People just don't get drunk at sporting events, like you southern folk like to do and then take it out on farm animals, we get hammered, pass out, wake up the next morning and write "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

God bless the Northwest.
