WAZZU fans are kidding themselves

(Buy a WSU hat here.)

Deadspin just released their story on the alleged abuse that Mike Leach and his coaching staff unleashed on his players. Looking through it, I can't say that anything is illegal or can be considered abuse, but if I were a parent or player - I definitely wouldn't go to WSU. Why? Leach treats his players like crap. Simply put.

Example one...

Sources and documents obtained by Deadspin recount clashes between training staff and coaches over player safety, and physical—and nearly physical—altercations between coaches and players. They describe "dangerously excessive" workouts used as punishments, including an episode in which coaches supposedly sprayed players in the face with water from a hose while making them exercise in a sandpit in cold weather.

Sure that isn't abuse but it's the kind of workout you probably don't even see in a boot camp. I can get past tough workouts in the sandpit, however, it's the treatment of injury that really disturbs me.

The father of a player in good standing with the football program told Deadspin that the conflict between the old training staff and the new coaches had to do with how aggressive the coaches were about influencing players to return from injuries before they were ready.

"I think this staff is definitely more aggressive in that sense," he said. Players who got hurt, he said, were placed at the bottom of the depth chart when they returned, where they risked missing up to half a season trying work their way back up. "There was this sense of being punished for being hurt, for sure," he said, "so naturally a kid doesn't want to lose his starting spot to hide his injury because he doesn't want to lose his spot."

The source said he knew Drake had a great reputation as trainer "only through my own kid's experience due to my kid getting hurt a fair amount of times. Talking with Bill, he was always an outstanding guy and I always felt like he had the best interest of the athlete in mind."

Another parent said coaches had been trying to cut injured players from the team in the spring, even if the injuries were not severe. The efforts to convince players "their careers were over" were a source of contention with the old training staff, the source said.

Again, not abuse, but it shows no real consideration for the student-athlete. Throw in that WSU's head football trainer sent a letter of complaint to Bill Moos, the athletic director, and that WSU completely threw Marquess Wilson under the bus... I just don't see why athletes would want to come to this school. I understand that tough practices are something that happen all across the nation on football teams - but this has almost a "We don't care about our players" attitude that won't exactly attract five-star recruits.

Looking at the comment section and Facebook, lots of WSU fans were saying "well case closed, nothing found by anyone, clean program" but what they're ignoring is that everybody has now seen how Leach treats his players. It's all over the internet. When he goes out to recruit players, they're going to bring this up.

"So you want me to come to the smallest football program in the Pac-12, one that hasn't had a winning season in god knows when and you're going to treat me like that?"

Yeah good luck Cougs.

I'm not saying any of this is illegal or anything like that, but what I am saying is that Leach now has a bigger image problem and so does WSU. It may be just a philosophy change, but you're really ignoring the fact that parents will be concerned where they're sending their kids and they'll pile over all this info. Sure if WSU is a kid's only choice he'll go, but good recruits are usually courted by several different schools.

If Leach doesn't get the on-field product turned around - good lord, WSU is in serious trouble.

Cougar Life Commercial

During the Daytona 500 today I saw a commercial for a dating site for cougars.

This ad made me laugh. I sent it to Brandon. He was excited to find another dating site to try. Not exactly what I intended.

But hey, if you like cougars....

"Recently voted the WILDEST dating service in America."

Why Casey is wrong about the Huskies

Being in Montana now, I can tell that most of the Inland Northwest doesn't exactly jive with Husky fans like Casey. After he wrote that purple and gold-tastic article that basically did nothing but brag about the Huskies, I felt the need to retaliate. First off here's how you spot a husky fan...

1. Girl Pants - Husky fans always wear girl or mom pants.
2. They're never at Husky games - They're too busy doing things like writing music, crying about their ex, cutting themselves, generally not caring about football and generally doing douchey things.
3. They dont have a job - Because they're a bunch of freeloading hippies!
4. They don't like WSU fans - Because Coug fans have jobs, like to put in a hard days work, and could drink them under the table.
5. They don't know they aren't good - Remember when they beat USC and everyone was like "oh, CHAMPIONSHIP" and that didn't happen. In fact they didn't finish the season with a winning record. Just saying.

Second, you're the Notre Dame of the West Coast, except much worse. You think your program is awesome and it's not. It hasn't been good for quite some time. And your stadium stinks like mold.

And finally...

(I'd show a photo of a UW Cheerleader too, but I don't think the width of this blog could take the size.)

GO COUGS!

WSU makes ESPN Commercial

Saw this on Huckleberries.

Alright, EWU alumni, when are our Eagles going to make a commercial? I'm thinking a Rodney Stuckey "This is SportsCenter" commercial. You know it's coming...

Things that are bigger underdogs than the WSU Cougars

The Cougars are 45-point underdogs today against the University of Southern California, meaning that the Trojans are more likely to lose against a collection of tackle dummies than Washington State University athletes.

However, things could be worse, I've come up with a list of underdogs more hopeless than the WSU Cougars.

Poland VS Germany, 1939 - The Polish had horses, the Germans had tanks.

A seagull VS a black hole - The bright side on this is that perhaps the black hole is some sort of portal to a seagull heavan where it's just one big park populated with old people handing out bread crumbs.

A 40-year old man VS Male pattern baldness - Ask Karl Malone. This is a hopeless fight.

VHS VS DVD - Think of it this way, how many VHS tapes have you bought in the last five years.

Pedophile VS Chris Hansen - On Dateline, Hansen lays down the law against Chi-mos. WSU will be shoved to the ground and handcuffed in the very same way.

Dogs VS Michael Vick - Oh wait, too soon?

WSU Cougars unveil new uniforms

So the WSU Cougars unveiled their new uniforms for the 2009 season and I have to say that the changes are a little underwhelming. They're still awesome uniforms mind you, but not much changes. They just switched from the "Cougar" script to the famous WSU logo on the helmet, added white pants to the away uniforms and played around with shoulder striping.

Let's play a game shall we? Home Jerseys before:

And the Home Jerseys after:

Away Jerseys before:

Away Jerseys after:

New Alternate Away Jerseys:

Again, I think the general scheme is awesome, this just isn't much of a change from the jerseys they had before. At least they didn't go back to the early stripping mess of the early 00s that made me seasick.

Ryan Leaf is a jackass

Things couldn't get much worse for Ryan Leaf.

Grand jury indicts Ryan Leaf for burglary, drug charges.

You know, all things considered, at least he didn't date a girl with 20 fake names (good job Dirk) or who is named Star Jones (Bad move Dwayne Wade). That would of sucked. Becoming the biggest bust in NFL history? There are much worst things in life. Like getting born with an extra hand sprouting from your forehead.

And has anyone noticed how Ryan Leaf looks like Bill Paxton? Just saying.

Fuskies huck up Apple Cup at Qwest Field

Huzzah! The Apple Cup will remain in Pullman after the deal to move the college football rivalry to Qwest Field has fallen apart. The reason? The Huskies being the Huskies and demanding more tickets than the Cougars despite it's neutral site designation.

PULLMAN - A deal to move the Apple Cup to Qwest Field, which seemed so close a week ago, is dead, killed not by fan outrage, but by a lack of seats.

“It became evident an understanding on ways to maintain the neutral-site atmosphere in regards to ticket allotment could not be reached,” Washington State athletic director Jim Sterk said in a release Friday that announced WSU was ending discussions to move the game, “therefore, our student-athletes and Cougar fans would not be best served without this key component.”

According to sources in the WSU athletic department, the original agreement gave WSU and the University of Washington each 31,000 seats in Qwest Field every year. But in the past week, UW expressed its desire for about another 7,000 additional seats, the sources said, in an attempt to mollify season ticket holders.

I was surprised by two things, the fact that UW would mess up the chance for basically another home game every season AND the fact that there are still Washington Huskies season ticket holders. Who knew?

Epic Photo: This is what Arizona State getting upset looks like

The Washington State Cougars are heating up at exactly the right time after they defeated No. 11 ranked Arizona State 51-49 in Pullman, Wash. today. This makes them a very, very dangerous team headed into the Pac-10 Tournament. What are the chances of them making the NCAA Tournament?

The worst jobs in sports

Working in sports is great. Instead of going to an office everyday you're going to the stadium and you're always in the limelight. However, there are some positions that you should just never take in this industry.

Youth Sports Officials - Okay, think of the worst berating a professional official has every received. Times that by 10, multiply the people doing it by about 30 and you pretty much have the atmosphere of a youth sporting event. Sports parents are the worst human beings on the face of the planet and guess who they love to hate.

Stephon Marbury's Therapist - Boy, you have fun trying to dig through that brain of his.

Crowd Control Management for Santa Clara - I don't know if you watched the Gonzaga-SC game last night but fans threw stuff onto the court, ON TWO SEPERATE OCCASIONS, causing technicals to be called and pretty much swinging the momentum of the game towards the Zags favor. Here's what the Broncos head coach had to say:

Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating implored to crowd to refrain from throwing objects, but later in the game, his team was hit with another technical when another object was thrown from the stands. Bouldin made two more free throws.

"That's not fair to our guys," Keating said of the fan or fans who threw the objects. "It's not fair to everyone in the gym who's there to watch a game in a great environment."Whoever it was, I hope they understand that they hurt our team tonight."

Bravo crowd control.

Arizona's assistant coach that focuses on defense

Now I bet you're wondering why I'm mentioning all these college basketball games. Simple. Last night was an amazing night for college basketball. Anyways, WSU defeated the Wildcats last night 69-53 in a fun game for Cougar fans but if you were from Arizona you cringed everytime a Coug player was left wide open or allowed to drive to the basket.

They stood around more than county road workers on the clock. But hey, maybe they wanted to keep WSU's postseason hopes alive.

That guy that always brings out the stools for WSU players to sit on during timeouts

Every timeout. This guy waddles out there with these fold out stools under his arms and sets them out for all the players. They get done with the time out and he has to fold them back up and retreat to his position ready to unfold at a whistles notice.

Really? A chair folder? That's like one step below the guy who squirts the water bottle into each individual athletes mouth.

But hey, he's more active during a basketball game than Shaq.

Epic Photo of Greatness: WSU upsets UCLA

Only the second time in the entire building's history, the WSU Cougars defeated the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilon 82-81.

They may have just revived their season.

WSU Weekly Update: At least beat the Huskies

It's going to be a tough task for the Washington State Cougars to salvage this season, currently sitting in seventh place of the Pac-10 (13-12 overall, 5-8 conference). It's probably is going to require a championship run in the conference tournament and I'm not sure that's happening.

However, mark your calendar. March 7. That's probably going to be the most meaningful game for the Cougs the rest of the season, regardless of if they make the NIT (Not-invited tournament).

That the regular season finale in Seattle, against the loathsome Washington Huskies who currently lead the conference. Sure they lost to the Purple and Gold by 20 points at home earlier in the season, but wouldn't that be something to give Cougar fan hope? They've had a pretty tough year so far.

Yes, we're grasping at straws here. But looking at the brutal stretch of the Cougars remaining schedule that's all you can really do. Kind of makes you wish they played in the WCC eh?

Who's ready for rowing season?

Bombshell Saturday

After watching WSU blow a game that was very winnable, and Gonzaga get resoundingly thumped by Memphis last night, I'm feeling like this at the moment.

Remember when basketball season was suppose to make us forget about that horrible football season for the state of Washington this year? Well other than the Huskies, things are quickly turning sour for everyone.

Now granted Gonzaga is still undefeated in the WCC, which is a wonderful high school basketball league, but their embarassing 68-50 loss to the Tigers really exposed their weaknesses to everyone in the country.

The Zags looked unathletic, outmatched, their star players did not step up to the occasion, Pargo's NBA draft dropped even further to the point where he'll playing in Italy, and Heytvelt was beat off the boards. But enough from me, let's hear from Spokesman-Review columnist John Blanchette, who apparently got plenty of camera time on ESPN (seriously they cut to him on the sidelines more often than Pargo, Day and Bouldin on the bench). He really says it best:

Speaking of nuggets, remember the giddy scouting report on this year’s Bulldogs – the one about having six players who can get you 20 points on any given night?

Well, not against these Memphis guys.

And remember this being the year that the Zags were Final Four material?

Would you settle for the second round right about now?

Well at least we aren't expecting anything anymore. Perhaps that Zag hype machine finally met its untimely end. From here on out, it's not your reputation, it's what have you done for me now?

As for the Cougs, well they've lost another one, the fifth time in six games, and most of those have been close contests that they could have won. It looks like the Crimson and Gray will be sitting at home unless they catch fire and win the Pac-10 Tournament.

Oh brother.

When do the Spokane Shock start? Actually pretty soon. March 18th to be exact as they'll host an exhibition game against the Arkansas Twisters. This game has a little bit of spit and vinegar in this one because:

The Twisters are led by former Spokane Shock Head Coach Chris Siegfried and Quarterback Kyle Rowley who were instrumental in bringing the ArenaCup Championship to Spokane in 2006.

And I have heard there's a little bit of bad blood between Siegfried and the Shock organization. I'm sure that the former coach wants to come in and beat the team he won a championship with. Probably a little more at stake here than just an preseason game.

It looked like these two teams were going to meet up in the playoffs last season until the Twisters were upset by the Central Valley Coyotes. Now we get an early season treat. Anyone want to make some "Siegfried Sucks" t-shirts?

Recruiting Class hype is lame

Other than providing this rather embarrassing photo of Paul Wulff yesterday, National Signing Day doesn't do a whole lot.

Whereas the NFL draft gives you a list of players you know will make an impact for your team, you really can't put a finger on who will be good and who wont.

Look at the top recruiting classes, thanks to Bloomberg.

ESPN SCOUTS INC. RIVALS.COM SCOUT.COM
1. LSU 1. Alabama 1. Ohio State
2. Alabama 2. LSU 2. Alabama
3. Texas 3. USC 3. LSU
4. USC 4. Ohio State 4. USC
5. Florida 5. Texas 5. North Carolina
6. Georgia 6. Florida State 6. Texas
7. Miami 7. Michigan 7. UCLA
8. Florida State 8. North Carolina 8. Georgia
9. Ohio State 9. Georgia 9. Oklahoma
10. Michigan 10. Florida 10. Penn State
11. Oklahoma 11. Miami 11. Michigan
12. South Carolina 12. South Carolina 12. Texas A&M
13. North Carolina 13. Oklahoma 13. South Carolina
14. Notre Dame 14. Arkansas 14. Stanford
15. Tennessee 15. Michigan State 15. Auburn
16. Penn State 16. UCLA 16. Mississippi
17. Clemson 17. Mississippi 17. Florida State
18. Virginia Tech 18. Auburn 18. Mississippi State
19. UCLA 19. Stanford 19. Miami
20. Arkansas 20. Notre Dame 20. Arkansas
21. Rutgers 21. Texas A&M 21. Florida
22. Mississippi 22. Miss. State. 22. Tennessee
23. Miss. State 23. Tennessee 23. West Virginia
24. South Florida 24. Virginia Tech 24. Notre Dame
25. Auburn 25. Penn State 25. South Florida

Great, you know what - those all are pretty big-time college programs on that list, so of course they're going to do well because they have the facilities, the money and the coaching. I remember ESPN's Colin Cowherd complaining about how it seems that a kids stock goes up when they're recruited by Notre Dame (and boy have they had sucess in the past two years :D).

What you get is over hyped kids, who don't perform later down the road. Hence, the Irish sucking. Throw out all the recruiting rankings because they've been wrong when it's come to Notre Dame, every single year. Watch their games, they have mid-major talent maaaybe. Seriously, watch them get outrun by any top program in the country. Yet they keep getting these "Top ranked recruiting classes."

And another thing to chew on is how much a recruiting class will affect a program. These are all top tier programs, they all get top tier kids. It's not going to make to significantly better because they're already on the mountain top.

But what about the programs nipping at the heels of these top programs, why can't we get coverage on how well they did - because the media sells more when they cover the top programs, cough, cough - and how much ground they made up. That's more important than learning that Texas brought in another kid that can run a 4.2 fourty. WOWEE! Tell me something I don't know.

So lets look at what we know: Eastern signed 33 kids-and that's it, you really don't know how those kids pan out until a few years down the road. Although I'm a little concerned with how many "all-state honorable mentions" are on their list. Honorable mentions? Isn't that given out to the kids that just hussle a lot? Now WSU is drooling over how much they kicked UW's butt with in-state recruiting. That's true, six of ten top state prospects went to the Cougs which could be a huuuge advantage for them over the next couple of years and could shift the balance of power from UW to WSU in terms of who wins between those two teams, but the Cougs are still in a conference with schools like USC - which could probably convince guys from the NFL to come back and play for them.

And that it. That's all we know from this recruiting class. You can't read anymore into it because of injuries, how many actually see playing time, and how well these top high school athletes do against other teams with top high school athletes. It's a wash.

But hey, at least Paul Wulff out recruited the Huskies, that's all I got to say.

December 17, 2008

Thanks 2008

Congratulations America. You've almost survived 2008. This year has been perhaps one of the worst for most of the country. The country has never been worse than it is right now.

Unemployment is UP.
Pay-rates are DOWN.
Gas prices are UP.

To top 2008 off, Washington has never experienced a worse sporting season in my lifetime.

The Seahawks are terrible, they were supposed to win the NFC West, yet can hardly beat themselves in a scrimmage. The Mariners were worse than terrible. The Huskies had the honor of becoming the worst team in the history of the PAC-10. The Cougars looked like a bad high school team every game. Eastern Washington University was supposed to contend for a FCS National Championship, instead their season was over by Week 6. Central Washington University (the only football team in the state with a winning record besides high school teams) headed into the D-2 playoffs as a huge favorite, only to loose in the first round to West Texas A & M.

Yeah, the state of Washington couldn't wait for the Fall Sporting season to get over with.

And then comes winter.

Winter means NBA. Winter meant rubbing salt in every Sonics fans wounds. The city would turn on their television only to see Clay Bennett, the man who stole the Sonics, spit in their face every night the Thunder played.

He told the city lies and broken promises. He bought the team, said he wanted to keep them here. But really, from day one, he was cheating on us with Oklahoma City. It was an affair that Seattle's marriage to the Sonics just couldn't survive. And everything ended in a bitter divorce, as Clay ran away late one night to the open arms of the midwest city. Leaving Seattle with an empty arena and a full glass of heartache.

The only gratification Sonics fans could get was that the new Oklahoma team is terrible. But that still doesn't help. It's kinda like when you get dumped by a girlfriend. You quickly pretend everything is alright because she went from you (who brought sexy back) to a tall, doofy looking, red haired kid.

You pretend everything is OK. You smile, you crack jokes about how funny looking he is. But deep inside your secretly dieing.

That's how every Sonics fan feels right now. They laugh at how bad the Thunder are. But deep down they secretly wish that it was the Sonics that were that bad. Because that would mean they never left.

And if that wasn't enough to make 2008 officially the Worst Year Ever. Oklahoma Today magazine made this move:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CLAYTON I. BENNETT NAMED 2008 OKLAHOMAN OF THE YEAR

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Today, the magazine of Oklahoma since 1956, has named chairman of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Clayton I. Bennett, Oklahoman of the Year for 2008. The feature story on Bennett, written by senior editor Steffie Corcoran, appears in the January/February 2009 issue.

Bennett, founder of the private investment firm, Dorchester Capital, is touted as the man who brought the NBA to Oklahoma. He leads a group of eight investors, all from Oklahoma City, who form Professional Basketball Club, LLC. The team played its first Oklahoma City game on October 29, 2008, after relocating from Seattle. Today, the team plays at the Ford Center in downtown Oklahoma City and is considered one of the youngest team in the NBA.

“No one came close to Clay Bennett as we set about selecting this year’s Oklahoman of the Year,” says Louisa McCune-Elmore, Oklahoma Today editor in chief. “His accomplishment presents an extraordinary moment in the life of Oklahoma, probably among the most important achievements in our capital city’s history.”

Those who know him best describe Bennett as a man of action. “People respect Clay,” says former Oklahoma City mayor Ron Norick. “When Clay is involved, things are going to happen.” Bennett grew up in Oklahoma City, graduated from Casady School in 1978, and married his high-school sweetheart, Louise Gaylord, in 1981.

Bennett’s respect for hard work and his civic involvement have garnered this Oklahoman of the Year great regard from his peers, both locally and in the wider community of the NBA. “I feel confident about the good hands the [Thunder] is in,” says NBA commissioner David Stern, “because they’re in Clay’s hands and in the hands of his investor group.”

The NBA may be happy about the team’s move to Oklahoma, but no one is as thrilled as Oklahomans. The NBA is considered the largest global sports brand. “An NBA franchise is an obvious economic boom, but just as important is what it does for the momentum and morale of Oklahoma,” says Governor Brad Henry.

“What I like most about this article and accompanying photos is its thorough review of the Thunder relocation, but also its insights into Clay’s unwavering commitment to his hometown, state, and especially his family,” says Hardy Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. “It’s a real portrait.”

Oklahoma Today publisher Joan Henderson says, “The year 2008 was an eventful year in Oklahoma, but nothing seemed as potentially transformative as the birth of the Thunder franchise in Oklahoma City.”

“Clay Bennett had the resourcefulness, tenacity, and acumen to make that dream a reality,” says Governor Henry.

The last quote in that story is what just kills me. That, "Clay Bennett had the resourcefulness, tenacity, and acumen to make that dream a reality."

Seriously?!?! You have got to be kidding me!

The only resourcefulness he used was his money to buy a team and then move it. His tenacity was only the fact that he made the Pacific Northwest despise his very name. (I had to write this blog because Brandon smashed his laptop in a fit of rage upon reading the headline in the magazine). So yes, it does take guts to tick off a whole region of the nation. And acumen? Seriously, smart do you have to be to "predict" that something a city has never had, will be successful?

Wait, I'm gonna do it right now. I'm thinking that the Sounders FC will be a huge hit in Seattle. Why? Because it's something new and exciting. DUH!

So you may think this is just another angry rant about Bennett, and that is fine. But the truth is, how could someone who lied repeatedly be honored?

You know it's a bad year, when a state gives their highest honor to a guy like Clay Bennett.

What's next? Drew Rosenhaus being named "Agent of the Year"?

Oh well. I'll just put on some Journey. Close my eyes. And hope 2009 is better.

November 2, 2008

You will be missed...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We’re gathered here today to remember a good friend, someone who gave us countless weekends of enjoyment and hope. They had a good run, even brought us an NBA title in 1979, but was tragically declared dead by authorities after a 127-13 drubbing taken by all three of it’s Div. I football teams last weekend.

What makes this tough to swallow is the fact that they were the life of the party on many occasions. They won 116 games a couple of years ago in baseball, but their skills deteriorated, retired or were traded away and the replacement parts were grossly overpriced.

They beat Texas in the Holiday Bowl and were among the nation’s top programs, but one coach let the program slip into mediocrity and a new one is struggling to pick the pieces up, or even score a point.

They once shared a National Title, but now the only thing they might be sharing in the future is Qwest Field if they can’t get state money to renovate their crumbling stadium.

They once had FCS national title hopes coming into this season, now they’ll be lucky to finish above .500. Meanwhile, a Texas Tech squad they played so closely in the first game of the season is ranked No. 2 in the BCS.

They were tragically ripped away from us, much like the basketball team in Oklahoma City and it will be a long, Tyrone Willinghamless journey to recovery. However there’s one thing that we can take solace in, it’s not how they lost but how they won.

Sometimes.

Like 1995, or that Super Bowl run a few years ago. Although even after the end this Saturday, they still found a way to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles.

We will miss them greatly, and we hope they find a better place, or at least a higher place in the AL West standings.

November 1, 2008

127-13

That's the combined score that all Div. I football teams lost by this weekend. Those 13 points came from FCS member Eastern Washington.

How bad is college football in Washington?

- EWU was supposed to compete for a national title, they will not make the playoffs.
- Winless UW will get worse since all Tyrone Willingham is now a lame duck coach. Good luck recruiting, Huskies.
- WSU is historically bad, giving up the most points in conference history and there's still some conference games left. It was also Stanford's biggest victory since 1949.

1949!

The Seahawks stink. The Mariners are a good AA team. The Sonics are now an atmospheric fart.

Somebody please tell me what I have to live for at the moment otherwise I'm going to jump off the ledge and start watching soccer.
