Star Trek vs. Star Trek...

With my day off I was able to watch Star Trek. Lots of it. They had a marathon on the SciFi Channel today and I also put in a few DVDs to keep the good feelings going. So excuse me for geeking out, but watching the Original Series cast and the Next Generation cast, it got me thinking: which is better?

So, since I'm in Montana right now (actual site of first contact with the Vulcans, according to Star Trek) and nothing better to do, let's compare the two series.

1. The Ship

There is nothing better than the original Enterprise and Enterprise-A from the movies. That thing has a certain awesomeness to it and looks like a spaceship should. The Enterprise-D? Looks like a Ford Taurus.

2. The Captians

I'm sorry, but William Shatner is mildly insane. Go and listen to the director's commentary for Star Trek 5. Unless he had five vodka and red bulls before doing that commentary, he's a lunatic. Now Captain Kirk is obviously a little more mentally capable but here's the thing... Kirk is Zap Brannagan from Futurama, almost down to a T. While there is something very charismatic about him, he's more of a gunfighter than a captian.

Captian Picard? That's the kind of guy that you want to go to war with. He's going to explore every option and go the diplomatic and smart way around things. Kirk? He'll just set the Enterprise to "self-destruct."

3. Engineers
Really, Scotty or Geordi LaForge? On shore leave, Scotty gets drunk and comes back with a hangover. LaForge wins a chess tournament. Yup.

4. Enemies

With the exception of this guy...

Khan isn't just a great Trek villian, but a great movie villain in general. He's that really spooky crazy-smart-evil combination that you don't mess with. However, other than that, the villains in the original series are kind of lame. The Klingons are better as allies than enemies, because they're honorable and frankly kind of badass. Romulans are just plan douchey. The other enemies were just whatever "Lost in Space" castoff monster they could find at the time.

The Next Generation? They had these guys...

Wait so they're basically unbeatable and instead of killing us we get assimilated? Yeah creepy as hell. Say hello to the Borg.

5. Women

Okay, the Original Series has this one nailed down. Way cooler than Deanna Troy.

Alright, so now that it's been all laid out for you, what do you think?

I don't think this guy goes on many dates.

Griz fans are awesome

In the final media poll for the FCS, everybody voted for Eastern Washington in first place, except for one person who voted for Delaware in protest of that fourth down spot call. That man was the sports information director for Towson University. Being naturally a little peeved, a good friend of mine sent him an email and got this response:

I am responding to you because you asked me this question in a polite manner. Surprisingly, there are many people have e-mailed me and called me all sorts of names.

Here is my reasoning:

I truly believe that Delaware was beaten by an egregious administrative error by the officials. Mario Brown was clearly short of the first down in the fourth quarter. If the chains had not been moved, I firmly believe that he would have short of the first down and Delaware would have taken over on downs.

Although Eastern Washington won the game, Delaware dominated the first 40 minutes and Delaware dominated the game statistically. If the ball had been spotted correctly, Delaware would have won.

When the ball was spotted erroneously, it seemed like more than the UD defense could handle. They had been on the field for a long time.

I didn’t mean to disrespect Eastern Washington in any way. They won the trophy and they are the national champions. Their impressive come-from-behind rally was outstanding. The fact that it was accomplished against a terrific defense made it even more impressive.

Polls are opinions and not everyone is going to agree.

Enjoy the celebration.

But it gets better, a whole lot better. Remember when I wrote this little column about how it's dumb when people "root for their conference," well apparently Griz fans didn't get the memo. Here's the rest of Dan's email...

PS – Here is a sampling of some of the other emails I have received:

If you in fact did vote Delaware #1 would you mind elaberating on how or even why? If you missed the box score Eastern Washington 21- Delaware 19 for the National Championship. I would think as a non bias voter you would want to keep some integrity in the results of the poll. If not you should refrain from voting and spare Towson the embarassment.

That's right, the bear claws of Griz Nation have descended upon Griz nation, much like they did to me when I wrote less than favorable columns about the University of Montana. Its crazy and awesome how Griz fans will go to bat for EWU over something as silly as a media poll. My hat is tipped to you Griz fans!

2011 Team RadioShack Team Kit

The 2011 Team RadioShack Team kit has been unveiled. I don't think it's as cool as those black jerseys that they wore the final day of the Tour de France.

But I do think these are neat. And should stand out in the peloton.

Those a-holes behind "The Day After Tomorrow" were right

Here's a map of snow cover in the United States recently and as you can see, there is a crap load of white stuff everywhere in the United States.

In fact, the only state that doesn't snow in it is Florida, but that's fine because they have a lot of old people and if we know something about old people it's that they don't like snow.

What is also funny is that you'll notice some areas in Montana right now that don't have snow in them. However, while they don't have snow, they're all under water because we're having flooding all over the place.

(Except for Lake County, where I live, which apparently is doing an audition for the North Pole)
Even Casey, who lives in Western Washington, which never gets snow, has texted me saying that it's snow. Usually it goes something like this...

"AAAAAAAAAAHHH I CANT DRIVEE AHHH LOOK AT ALL THIS SNOW AHHAJLDKJLSKDJLKD ITS THE END OF THE WORLD"

Yeah he kind of overreacts.

Anyways, I'll be stocking up on survival guides now.

An Idiot Abroad

What a sweet gig. And hilarious title for a show.

Now this is a mountain bike course! I love that it even went through someones house.

Final AP FBS Top 25

Today is a sad day. The college football season is over. But what a season it was. Especially for Eastern Washington University.

What a magical season for the Eagles. So magical in fact that during the final AP FBS Top 25 Poll, Eastern Washington received one vote.

Awesome!

Winter X Games Commercials

These new commercials for the 15th Winter X Games are some of my favorite in a long time.

Let's just say that even the mule deer know that Bobby Brown is awesome and they give mad props to Sammy Carlson. Snow owls know Shaun White is gonna kill it at the Games and that Gretchen Bleiler is gonna go huge. Oh, and even some saplings get in on the action.

Check them out:

I tip my cap to you Husky fans for not rooting for Oregon in the National Championship game

I've been known to rail on UW fans quite a bit on this blog, however after the Huskies beat the insufferable Nebraska Huskers this season, I had to give them a tip of the cap.

I also have to give Husky fans for doing the right thing as sports fans: Rooting against Oregon. Sure winning the national championship would be a nice feather in the cap for the Pac-10, but Husky fans are bitter, bitter rivals with the Ducks.

While I personally think it's crap when Husky fans say "Oh we're actually a bigger rival with Oregon" because it IS a load of crap. The Apple Cup will always carry more weight than UW-Oregon. However, Husky fans are doing the right thing by saying "Go Auburn" instead of "Go Pac-10."

I've always thought the SEC is a steaming pile of football vanity, mainly because SEC fans root for each other in bowl games so they can be the best football conference. Um... why? I thought the SEC had the best rivalries and football mattered most to them. If that were true... they wouldn't be rooting for their "bitter rivals?"

Fans that root for "their conference" have no real understanding on how stupid that sounds. "I'm going to root for the team that beat my team out for a spot in this game."

You don't see Red Sox fans rooting for the Yankees.

So Husky fans, congrats, you're not completely hopeless.

Marshawn Lynch run, one more time, this time in 2D

This doesn't get old does it?

Video of EWU Celebration

The funniest thing is watching Swoop try and watch the game over the football players and not have a clue of what is going on. Can't... see.... from... inside... this suit....

WHO DAT?

Washington teams will do this to you

I'm so glad the Eagles could cause the phenomenon "The Joe Biden Face" just in time for the Seahawks to give Drew Brees "The Joe Biden Face."

Epic Video: Perhaps the greatest post-season run

I would imagine the NFC West talk will quiet down now that every media source in the western world has been proven to be horrible blow hards that don't know a thing about football. Seahawks don't belong in the playoffs? Shut up.

Joe Biden, you suck

Congrats Joe on a wonderful season by your Blue Hens. Could you stop spending taxpayers money watching your team lose?

Things that should change now that Eastern Washington are champs...

Alright, the Eags are national champions, meaning that there need to be a few changes around here...

1. Time to rename Washington Street to Beau Baldwin Street, because after all when the heck has George Washington won a national championship?

2. Please refer to Washington and Washington State as the "other" football teams in the state of Washington.

3. I think it's time for the Seahawks to play on red turf. Or lime green turf.

4. Gonzaga should now be relegated to the "schools that haven't won a national championship in a major sport" category of the Spokesman.

5. Is it too early to request sainthood for Taiwan Jones and Bo Levi Mitchell? I'm sure the Vatican would be more than willing...

6. John Blanchette should now actually come out to regular season games instead of waiting for them to make the playoffs than acting like he's their long-tenured columnist. "Oh Oh yes, I've followed this team from the beginning."

7. Colin Cowherd should now get a half-hour section of his show to talk about nothing but Eastern Washington University.

8. Rename "The Easterner" to the "Bo Levi-er."

9. Rename "I-90" to "That road that leads to Title Town"

Spring is here?

I took this photo outside my place this morning.

Perhaps the daffodils are just wanting to celebrate the Eastern Washington University National Championship.

Or perhaps spring is here?

It is only the beginning of January. What is happening?

Eastern Washington claims FCS crown

Brandon and I are still on cloud 9 this morning. The Eastern Washington University Eagles are National Champions! And after trailing by 19 points they rallied late in the 3rd to win their first National Championship.

Congrats to Beau Baldwin and the Eastern Washington University football team!

This... is the greatest night of my life

My dad called and said "The Eags pulled it off" and I can't think of a better way to put it. National Champions, and to celebrate, here are the headlines from this historic night...

Oh and I just bought roughly one hundred dollars worth of championship gear. GO EAGS!

J.C. Sherritt wins the Buck Buchanan Award

Yesterday J.C. Sherritt won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS. Now today we see if the Eastern Eagles can win the National Championship.

FRISCO, Texas - Eastern Washington’s J.C. Sherritt accepted the Buck Buchanan Award Thursday night here, becoming the second Eagle in three seasons and the fourth Big Sky Conference player since 2003 to capture the prestigious honor.

The Buchanan is presented annually by The Sports Network to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Thursday’s banquet – sponsored by Fathead.com – was held at the Embassy Suites a few miles away from Pizza Park, where Sherritt and the Eagles will battle Delaware for the 2011 NCAA Division I National Championship on Friday.

Voting for the Sports Network Awards was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season. Media and sports information directors were allowed to vote. Sherritt earned 24 first-place votes and 253 total points. Wofford's Ameet Pall and Western Illinois Kyle Glazier tied for second with 234 total points. Sherritt was listed on 84 of the 130 ballots cast.

FCS National Championship Game

It's under 3 and half hours till the game to decide the BEST football team in the country kicks off.

Here's a fan made highlight reel of the Eastern Washington Eagles and the Delaware Blue Hens.

Go Eagles!

Let it be known....

The Delaware Blue Hens are cooked.

See Red. Be Red. Go Eagles!

It's gameday for the Eastern Washington Eagles as they will battle for the National Championship.

This also means that it's "Eastern Washington University Eagles Day" and I hope that everyone is wearing red.

I actually took the red to a new level. I painted the inside of my house for the game. Hope Lindsey doesn't mind....

I've noticed something about Matt Hasselbeck...

So the Seahawks have named Matt Hasselbeck as their starter for the playoff game this weekend. That's when (at the suggestion of my good friend Jake) I noticed that Hasselbeck bears a strange likeness to a cartoon character.

Behold the best quarterback in Seahawks' history...

and this guy...

If the Seahawks start a center named Lucy, they're boned.

The Man With the Golden Voice

This man has a crazy good radio voice, and after drugs and alcohol had him living in a tent near the road, the Columbia Dispatch did a story on the "Man with the golden voice" and now he's gotten job offers from NFL Films and the Cleveland Cavs.

Ted Williams, a former radio announcer, was living in a tent near a highway, his life ruined by drugs and alcohol, until the Columbus Dispatch posted a video of him begging for money, thus showcasing the man with the golden voice.

The video, which highlighted his majestically silky voice, went viral on the Internet. Williams, 56, has since been flooded with job offers, including one from NFL Films and another from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who offered him a two-year contract and volunteered to pay for his living expenses.

"I don't know which one to choose, which one is the right one," he said on "Today," regarding the job prospects.

Williams flew Wednesday to New York to see his 90-year-old mother, Julia, whom he said supported him through his struggles with addiction.

"She has always been my best friend," he told the Associated Press on Wednesday, crying. "When I was a kid, she would take me down to Radio City Music Hall and on the subway. I'm just glad that she is still around. I prayed that she would live long enough that I could make her proud and see could her son do something other than stand along the side of the road with a sign asking for money."

Wow. What an uplifting story. Best of luck to him! Only in America.

Goodbye, Vince Young

Looks like the Tennessee Titans made the right choice and decided to abandon the Vince Young project. Bravo. After hearing what he did in the locker room, I thought it was unbecoming of somebody who could take a team to the Super Bowl. Good riddens Vince Young.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams says it's time to let Vince Young go and for the franchise to find its next quarterback.

The Titans released a statement Wednesday night in which Adams said Young won't be on the team's roster next season, but he's still evaluating the coaching staff.

"We have two critical decisions to make, the direction of the coaching staff and the future at the quarterback position. They are separate issues to me and will be dealt with separately," Adams said.

Adams is the owner who wanted Young drafted No. 3 overall out of Texas in 2006 and said on draft day that "VY is my guy." But with his general manager and senior executive vice president traveling to Houston to meet with Adams on Monday, the 88-year-old owner decided Young no longer is the quarterback for his franchise.

They're still looking at the coaching staff, but I would like to say that this year Young was a locker room cancer and so was Randy Moss. That's not the coaches fault.

Reasons why you're single... high school sports photographer

I can get away with this because I am a high school sports photographer, but at least I have a soul....

You see them on your Facebook. They're the ones with the overly artsy profile pic of some landscape, some silhouette or something just so completely douchey, you want to un-friend them on the spot.

Example: A photo of them taking a photo with their camera.

Then they always constant post quotes from obscure french photographers about "how my camera catches the light of the world" or something stupid like that. Like who comes up with this ass material? You take a photo with a digital camera that does the work for you. Congrats! A mother in Indiana can get the same exact shot as you.

Then you see their website www.overratedphotographyguywebsite.com where he puts up his best work, which wouldn't make it on the back of a newspaper's sport page but to him it's art!

You see him at all the high school games. He's not working for anyone, just "snapping some shots for the parents" and then when they ask him how much they usually charge ridiculous prices for crappy photos that he still claims to own the rights too. He's been doing this for years, taking the same exact kind of long lens action shots that never deviate or never show a different angle.

Yet he considers it art and charges his time for portraits like he's Ansel Adams.

He puts his watermark copyright on every single photo he takes like he's freakin' ESPN, and bristles at the thought of someone using his photo without at least paying 400 dollars for an out of focus photo.

Untalented high school sports photographer, that is why, sir, you are single.

Snooki has a book published, pigs fly

Saw this on Tosh.0's blog, where I also found the herpes pizza photo. My future wife just published her first book...

Daniel Tosh pulled out some excerpts and here is the one that made me laugh out loud, in front of strangers...

"Gia danced around a little, shaking her peaches for show. She shook it hard. Too hard. In the middle of a shimmy, her stomach cramped. A fart slipped out. A loud one. And stinky."

See the original post here.

This will not be the sponsor for the FCS Championship Game

The Eagles will be playing in Pizza Hut Park, not Herpes Pizza Park. Thank god.

This is a pretty neat video about what the Dutch do for fun in the winter.

Eastern Washington football gear arrives late to Frisco

The Eastern Washington University football team made it to Frisco, Texas for the National Championship game just fine. Their gear though, it didn't.

Their equipment took a detour though, forcing some changes to a tight schedule mandated by the NCAA. Sports Information Dave Cook said everything arrived around 9 a.m. and that everything is "all well now!"

With the late arrival of their football gear, instead of practicing Wednesday morning at Pizza Hut Park, the Eagles will practice late in the afternoon after a media luncheon and a team photo.

Eastern Washington will have another walkthough on Thursday afternoon, right before the FCS Award Finalists press conference. On Friday they'll have a pre-game meal at 4 o'clock local time. Kickoff to the game is at 6 (4 p.m. PT).

Here's to hoping that everything smooths out for the Eagles who are already the heavy underdog to the Delaware Blue Hens.

Here's an old photo of Magic Johnson wrestling George "The Iceman" Gervin. I don't know if they're using the right "elbows down" rule.

Former Olympic Gold Medalist on "The Biggest Loser"

If you watched the Rams-Seahawks game the other night, you probably saw "The Biggest Loser" promo that mentioned wrestler Rulon Gardner. This guy was a stud. He knocked off the undefeated Russian Greco-Roman wrestler Alexander Karelin, who haden't lost in 13 years, to win the Olympic gold for the 286-pound weight class.

Now? He weighs 474 pounds. Yikes. See what happens when you train and train and train and eat carbs and eat carbs and eat carbs, and then stop? Yeah your body goes to pot. Anyways, this is definitely a story to follow.

Rulon attributes the weight gain to getting used to bad habits. According to the show, he's happily married, so who really knows what occurred in the past decade to take an athlete from peak physical condition to this? Oh, right—NBC knows, and will likely use this information to tug at the Biggest Loser viewers' heartstrings until the end of the season.

After his weigh-in, Rulon had a few words: "Being an athlete and winning the Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling to... World Champion... to Olympic Bronze medal to... to this... is a shame, it's tragedy. It's horrifying for me and my family

Since he is a wrestler, and they now how to drop weight in a hurry, this guy is going to blow away the overweight housewife from Kansas. Just sayin...

Bear Grylls skills help save lost teen

Jake Denham, 14, spent nine hours in 1 degree Fahrenheit temperatures after getting separated from his parents on a ski trip.

But having watched the Discovery channel's popular television show Man vs. Wild, Denham knew what to do thanks to Bear Grylls.

He dug a snow cave for shelter as Grylls had demonstrated on the show.

Denham later used another tip from Grylls and followed ski tracks down Mount Bachelor, Oregon.

The teenager suffered only mild hypothermia.

For Sale: The glass house from Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Remember Cameron's house from Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Its on the market and you can get a little bit of cinematic history.

Or live in it.

According to Gawker.com - Designer by architects A. James Speyer and David Haid in 1953, the cantilevered steel-and-glass property offers 5,300 square feet of living space and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout.

No word on whether or not Cameron's Dad's car comes with it.

Seahawks-Rams Live Game Blog

This one is for all the marbles folks! So why don't we do a live game blog for the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams football game. I promise I won't drinking during it, although it is tempting with Charlie Whitehurst in at quarterback.

The many faces of Mark Brunell

Holy Crap! Mark Brunell got into an NFL game today (playing for the Jets) at the ripe age of 40. Since he went to the University of Washington, here is a tribute to the former Huskies quarterback.

Brunell apparently filed for bankruptcy this summer, so here's hoping he turns thing around. I'm sure he's got another five years in him.

This is how Brett Favre's career ends

Brett Favre, ESPN's greatest quarterback of all-time, ended his career on the bench.

DETROIT -- Brett Favre's career apparently ends without him taking a snap.

The 41-year-old quarterback sat out Minnesota's game at Detroit. The Vikings declared him inactive about 80 minutes before kickoff Sunday, concluding days of speculation over whether he could sufficiently recover from his Dec. 20 concussion. He also missed Minnesota's previous game at Philadelphia.

He is retiring right? It's done right? No chance of him coming back this year right? Check back in three months when everyone starts the Favre talk once again.

Seahawks! Rams! Who Cares?

I've already stated that Seahawks fans that hope their team loses today are morons, as a playoff game is much more entertaining for fans than a slightly higher draft pick (because you know, Seattle has drafted so well in the past, COUGH COUGH). So put your Hawks jersey on, get (alot of) the beer on ice and get ready for a terrible NFC West game.

But really? Why is everyone knocking on the Hawks? Sure it's embarrassing for a 7-9 team to make the playoffs, but remember how bad and hopeless they were last year?

If they win their division its a heck of a lot better than what they've accomplished the past two seasons (4-12, 5-11). While 7-9 is nothing to bang pots and pans about, it's a whole heck of a lot more respectable. And if you're looking at next season, a 7-9 record means they won't be saddled with an insanely tough schedule.

Just nevermind they need upgrades in just about every position, I'm just trying to be optimistic here.

TCU is not tiny

So TCU won the Bowl Game. It was a great matchup between two great teams. However, one thing that did annoy me was how ESPN described TCU as a "tiny school" winning the game for "all non-BCS schools"

What? Are you kidding me? They're going to be in the Big East next year and become the very "big schools" that all the non-BCS schools hate. And they're not that small to begin with.

TCU has over 8,000 students, which doesn't make it an Ohio State by any stretch (it's smaller than EWU) but there are smaller BCS schools. It's not about enrollment, it's about recruitment anyways.

And the Horned Frogs play in a 44,000-seat stadium that hosts its own Bowl Game every year (picture above, it's called the Armed Forces Bowl). Tiny? I think not.

Also, the Horned Frogs weren't the underdog in this game as they've been among the best in the nation for a few years. No normal football fan thought they were "the little guys."

So come on ESPN, stop beating us over the head with these story lines that don't actually fit reality.

Epic Photo: New Years in Spokane

Great image from the Lilac City. Miss that place!

The Tri-Cities, where we can't figure out how to freeze ice

I hate the Toyota Center in the Tri-Cities. Why? Because it's an oversized Cosco with a hockey rink in the middle. How crappy are things there? Well...

The New Year's Eve match-up between the Spokane Chiefs and Tri-City Americans has been postponed after one period of play due to poor ice conditions at the Toyota Centre in Kennewick.

Following a collision at the Americans’ player’s bench, an approximately one-foot long hole developed in the playing surface. After a substantial amount of effort between the on-ice officials and the Toyota Center operations staff to patch the hole using various techniques, it was determined that the playing surface did not meet Western Hockey League standards, forcing the game to be postponed. The decision was reached in cooperation between Americans’ Governor and General Manager Bob Tory, Spokane General Manger Tim Speltz, and WHL Commissioner Ron Robison.

The Western Hockey League is working with both clubs and Toyota Center manager, VenuWorks, to determine a potential date for rescheduling the game. Details of that game will be announced early next week.

I'm sure those people that bought tickets were realllly happy.

Winter Classic Blues

Hey Spokane! See all that snow on those bleachers? You'll get to sit on that on Jan. 15 when the Chiefs play in the first Holiday Classic of the franchise's existence. While I've always been pumped for the idea and think Spokane will love seeing their team play in Avista Stadium, one thing that the NHL seems to be really screwing up is their outdoor games.

I mean talk about putting all your eggs in one basket. The outdoor classic was the smartest thing that the league has done in years (and the league hasn't done many smart things). They took two premiere teams and matched them up outdoors in one awesome New Years Day game. Now? What the heck are all these other outdoor games they're cutting to now? So instead of just one awesome game, there's several?

If you're going to overload people than you're going to dilute your product and the ratings and buzz will drop considerably. And why is hockey putting all their mustard into one day of the year. Your games are on Versus, no casual sports fans watch your games and other than Ovechkin and Crosby, who are marketable stars?

Perhaps the NHL should work on the overall product as opposed to one regular season game.

With that said, I'm still super pumped for the Chiefs to play outdoors.
